What's with the big gap in some of Tokyopop's manga?

How come some of the releases in Tokyopop's manga line have abnormally large gaps in-between volumes??

I know that some series have actually caught up or are quickly catching up to the Japanese releases (like Battle Vixens & DNAngel), and I understand that the releases have to slow down. But even so, waiting 1 year seems a bit outrageous, even if it's catching up quickly. And some like Ai Yori Aoshi are slowing down to releasing 1 volume every 4 months, even though it's already finished in Japan!

Being the curious person I am, Is there any specific reason for this?

It might have to do with the overcrowding on bookstore shelves. Retailers prefer that publishers release manga slower, so that they have more time to sell the copies they already have and don't have to remove series just to make room for more volumes of old ones. I think the preferred release rate for bookstores is every three months or something.

I've been curious about this myself, particularly for Vampire Game which only has one volume left, but Tokyopop doesn't even have a release date for it yet.

The store shelfspace argument would make sense if it wasn't for the fact that no other publishers seem to be affected by this and Tokyopop keeps coming out with new titles. If shelfspace was really a concern, they would finish current series before licensing and releasing new ones.

I thought it might have something to do with evening out the profit line. A lot of TokyoPop's bigger series (Kare Kano, Samurai Deeper Kyo, DNA) are coming to an end. This would mean a strange loss of profit to show investors. Maybe they're stretching out some series, knowing we'll eventually buy them anyway.
