Wow, Zipang? Hot damn, Geneon, way to go.
Always good to hear about a company you trust getting a high quality show you never expected to see licensed. |

Cool. I was actually thinking of checking it out recently, being by one of my favorite directors. But now that it's licensed, I can enjoy the new experience via DVD .

I haven't heard much about Geneon recently, but they've been one of my favorite companies, and I like Zipang, so in conclusion, huzzah!

I'd rather see the manga licenced, but this is still good news. I'm suprised Viz hasn't tried to pick up a Kawaguchi title to headline their Signature Line.

Excellent. Maybe if this doesn't flop we'll see the manga, since as Kagemusha said it is a perfect fit for the Signature line-up.

Wow, this is one series I did not expect to get licensed, especially since it carries so much controversy with it. I'm worried it might have too much of a Japanese nationalistic undertone. And since all I know of the plot consists of a uber Japanese battleship going back in time and kicking everyone's butt (including the Americans) and turning the tide in WWII or something, I'm not sure how viewers would respond. I'm most probably ill-informed, but I'd like to hear some opinions on this show and how well you guys think it was handled.

As good as it apparently is, it's not exactly going to be making a blip on anyones controvery-radar. It's fiction, afterall. |

Actually, it had some controversy as a fansub because of its politics. It prob. will also as a Region 1 release imo. WWII is still an emotional topic for a segment of the world population.

Sounds like a good show, even though I keep wanting to add a "Beep, Beep" in front of the title.

What I meant was controversy that matters. Lets face it, Zipang! isn't exactly going to be topping DVD sales charts because I imagine a semi-realistic fictional Anime which won't go to TV and has no gratuitous panty shots, violence, samurai, catgirls etc etc isn't going to sell paticularly well enough for it to garner that kind of media-based attention. |

It, uh, doesn't though. The whole controversy thing about it I'm almost entirely certain is perpetuated mostly by people who haven't seen it. I mean, you openly say you don't really know anything about it, but mention it's about a Japanese battleship going back in time and kicking everybodies ass and turning the tide of war - that isn't the case. It's about a modern day Japanese missile cruiser being thrown back to the time of WW2, and the core of the series is in the lose-lose situation the crew of the ship has been put in (On one side they have America, who they only know as the friends and allies of modern times as the 'enemy', yet on the other side they have Imperial Japan, who may be their fellow countrymen but do they really have anything in common with them?), as well as their efforts to stay out of the conflict and minimise the damage to history caused by their presence. About the only thing that could bother people is that it probably portrays rather idealised views of certain Japanese historical figures, and it doesn't go out of it's way to show Japan as 'evil' or wrong. |

It wouldn't be much of a controversy since there was an American version of this idea done in 1980 called The Final Countdown. It's about an current day American aircraft carrier transported back through time to a few days before Pearl Harbor. |

Please correct me if I'm wrong but...
spoiler[In The Final Countdown, didn't Pearl Harbor still happen? Whereas, from what I read in another forum about Zipang, Japan never gets A-bombed and comes out smelling like a rose because of intervention from that cruiser. This premise is similar to 2009: Lost Memories.] |

Just to comment a little on The Final Countdown. Quite a few similarities in that and Zipang wouldn't you say? Specifically the first few episodes are remarkably similar. |
