While lurking through the Geneon Lounge here:
http://www.geneonlounge.com/index.php?id=159 ...I watched the trailer for the upcoming release of Starship Operators. It has a very interesting premise of having a group of mostly girl cadets fight against an enemy while being broadcasted on the air; so we got ourselves a reality TV concept mixed in. From what I got in the trailer, it sounds like the Ocean Group is dubbing it (that narrator really sounds like Kelly Sheriden who also did Hitomi in Escaflowne and Sango in Inu Yasha). Not to mention the music is done by the infamous Kenji Kawai of GiTS fame with songs by KOTOKO (Please! series). So is this series worth it because I remember a few fansub groups dropped it or never got around in fansubbing it (thus low priority) before it got licensed by Geneon. |

Wow, that sounds awesome and looked very crisp. For some reason it sorta reminded me of Blue Submarine No.6 (probably the one ship vs. the enemy aspect). It certainly was an impressive director cast behind it. Heck, the only thing I could find slighty negative with is . . . the name. Doesn't exactly grab ya but hey, that's me.
EDIT: After further review compaing basic story and characters, does this seems a little close to Xenosaga Episode I? I mean I liked it, but the clothes and even some of the names/action sequences . . . |

I tried getting into the series when it was being fansubbed earlier this year but I could never stay awake through the show after the second episode. That and it seemed like it jumped right into the middle of situations instead of developing the basic plot and main characters first, although I suppose that's what they had to do with 13 episodes.

I thought the show was pretty interesting and I'd like to see the rest of it. I'm not sure, though, if it's really worth buying for me since it wasn't that good and it's only 13 episodes long. It would definitely be worth at least a rental though.

I just finished watching this series courtesy of netflix, and I thought it was rather interesting. The space battles seemed more realistic, imo, then most space battles you see in anime, you know, when they fly through the enemy fleet and take out half of the enemies without getting hit. I liked how there were many similarities between space combat and ocean combat done with normal ships. I would not read this spoiler unless you have already seen the series, btw. spoiler[ In the last episode, when the Captain was inputting the Self destruct code, it even said Scuttle code, which got a chuckle from me.]The ideas that one of the women on the bridge came up with, for combat, were pretty interesting, as well. If you like anime about space and such, check it out, for sure. I also liked the artwork, it reminded me of gonzo, which I am a big fan of.
I might just buy it, if I can find it semi cheap on amazon or ebay or well anywhere heh. |

ANN has done reviews on all three volumes of the series; in fact, reviews for the last two are still on the front page under the "Latest Reviews" sidebar. Links are given below. I highly recommend checking those out, as they'll give you a good feel for what kind of series it is and details on the dubbing. (Yes, that is Kelly Sheridan's voice and yes, that is Ocean Group's work, although they've dug up a lot of new people for this dub.)
Volume 1 Volume 2 Volume 3 Short version? The pacing is slow and not especially involving until the last volume, and if you're looking for slam-bang action then you're looking in the wrong place. This is a very intellectual, tactically-oriented drama rather than a true action series, so if that kind of thing interests you then you'll probably like the series. I did, but not everyone will. You(and the reviews) say 'Tactical' but what flavour. Is it more of an aircraft flying around doing their thing(which looks terribly boring...) or more of a naval style(which looks interesting).
If it is Naval in style is it a traditional sail powered type(though using solar panels and the like and catching 'solar winds' as it were) or more of a modern type? |

If I understand your question correctly, the closest real-world parallel to the way the spaceship battles play out is probably WWI-era naval battles, albeit ones where things like beam weapon power-up times and warp fields are factors. Think about the most tactical Star Trek battles and you have a rough approximation.

Sounds like I'd probabally like it too. I usually try and pick up as much sci-fi anime as I can get my hands on, it being my favorite genre. |

Starship Operators reminded me a bit of Infinate Ryvius and Banner of the Stars 1, all shows that I love. The OP credits are very misleading, and I will agree with ANN that the theme song is rather lame. The ED credits are amazing and I feel the song ang images fit the series perfectly. I will also agree to popular opinion that the series gets better as it progresses. There are some cute moments, some sad moments, and some really funny moments in the series. In that regard it also reminded me also of Gunparade March, a series which I feel is often neglected. Both series have wonderful endings in my opinion. Unlike some others i actually enjoyed the characters (of both series) and didn't have a pacing issue. I've always been a fan of shows that will have an episode with no fighting mixed in with an episode which is all fighting. It brings variety to a series and prevents the fight of the week syndrome.
