Here's the thing about Mamoru Oshii: He's a goddamn grump. Same with Hayao Miyazaki. He's a goddamn misanthropic, curmudgeonly old man, who hates anything he hasn't made himself. The fact that Miyazaki and Oshii are old friends is telling, I think, since the two of them do nothing but hate everything the other guy makes.

Let me show you where my head was at when I read that:

Mamoru Oshii: Hey, I'm Grump!
Hayao Miyazaki: I'm Not-So-Grump!

Oshii & Miyazaki: And we're Anime Grumps!

That is incorrect, because Miyazaki-san said the Incredibles was very ambitous for an American movie, so to say Miyazaki only likes Ghibli's work is misinformed. But to be fair, Miyazaki holds Pixar in high regard, so I wouldn't be suprised. Then again, he has not or will not ever say anything of the like regarding Japanese anime, so..........

As big Oshii fan frankly I dont think Patlabor 2 is such great piece of work that everyone makes it out to be,heck I like the first part more.Miyazaki was also spot on when he was talking about villain in Patlabor 2.
When it comes to the best studios that would objectively have to be KyoAni and Toei animation.I dont like most of shows from KyoAni but the way they treat their employees is so much better then any other studio. Not to mention that their stuff looks spectacular and it is all in house animation.Toei is also great because they let young ambitious people to work on their animes. As is evidenced by Mamoru Hosoda doing that creepy One Piece movie.

This made me chuckle a bit.

Did someone say something nice about the RahXephon movie? Guess it's brain bleach time.

I have yet to meet an Anime studio that consistently knocks out great works. Gainax made FLCL and Neon Genesis Evangelion, but also made TTGL. BONES made RahXephon and Wolf's Rain but also Eureka seveN and Darker than Black: Ryūsei no Gemini. Madhouse made Chihayafuru and One Outs but also Needless and Rideback.

Even Ghibli isn't perfect. My Neighbor Totoro was an hour of boring nonsense (albeit charming and beautifully-drawn), with a very thin plot tacked on the end. Howl's Moving Castle had problems focusing on what it wanted to do and tried to be too much to too many people. Castle in the Sky was so meh it left almost no impression on me and I can't remember huge portions of it. And don't get me started on Nausicaa . . .

Sorry, didn't mean to turn this into an anti-Ghibli rant. I love many of the works they've done. Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday and Whisper of the Heart are some of my favourite movies ever, animated or otherwise.

Patlabor 2 was quite good, but not mind-blowing. I don't understand why people work themselves up into such a frenzy over it. From the sheer adulation it gets you'd think that audiences just spontaneously orgasm while watching it.

Pretty much what I always say whenever someone uses a random director's comment about how "anime sucks" or "anime is dying". I always tell people to look at what they've done; especially recently. Most of the time it's from bitter people who can't get work anymore so they blame everyone else around them. My favorite is when that "anime director" someone cites's only work was background artists or storyboards for shows and not an actual main director, producer, or creator.

You realize him saying "for an American movie" is a backhanded compliment, right? That's not the most genuine compliment you could give something if you have to preface it like that. You can easily take it as an insult.

You see video games with high quality cel-shaded visuals such as Ni No Kuni and the Naruto games which quite frankly look almost or (in Naruto's case) even better than their source material ( I know that this is subjective, but this is art we're talking about). So I wonder: why aren't more anime trying out a fully CG art style?

The day anime becomes fully CG is the day I cry. That stuff is fine for video games or a random opening/ending like Pretty Cure's stuff, but if it becomes as common as it is in American animation to make a show in full CG and kick hand drawn stuff to the curb then I would find it very hard to stay interested in the medium. Granted, those cel-shaded looks of the Naruto games look better than, say, the new Ninja Turtles show where everyone looks like a cheap block of plastic, but it's still not something I want to see replace traditional animation.

I'm not sure on how serious I can take Oshii or Miyazaki on there is no quality in the industry as a whole. Stuff sucks. Every year, no matter where you are, some pile of steaming poop is produced. Often produced more often than the quality we are looking for.

If we're talking about sci-fi (especially hard sci-fi) genre anime, I would agree completely with Mr. Oshii. Same with Miyazaki, if this were an argument about mostly family friendly titles.

As for the whole quality production. I know this is lame but I have to say Gainax. More so for their brilliant use of waning resources and still manage to give something an ending.

Interesting responses on the "best studio" question! I don't know if I have my own answer for that... My favorite animation studio ever is GAINAX, but I don't think ANYONE would say they have anything near to a perfect batting average. For all their FLCLs and Gurren Laganns and Evas and Honneamises, they have pleeeenty of Melody of Oblivions and This Ugly Yet Beautiful Worlds... I guess the moral of the story is Nobody (or No Organization) Is Perfect!

I don't think Toei is as bad these days as it used to be in the early 00s, though. They've got some real good artists on board who can do a lot with a little.

Regarding the reporting of copyright violations on YouTube --- as far as I've seen, YouTube's system only allows for the copyright holders themselves to report violations, not just any user who stumbles on an infringing video. When you click the "report violation" button and go through the forms to report a copyright violation, they specifically state that they don't accept third-party notifications of copyright infringement. It's an unfortunate system, as it leaves the entire policing of YouTube's content up to the rights holders, and doesn't allow regular users to at least flag for review content that may be infringing.

How is GAINAX making the best anime to ever exist (TTGL) proof thay they aren't perfect? Gimme some of the shit you're smoking.

But the difference is that TTGL is actually a good show.

EighteenSky, I don't think you know what the word "literally" means.

Also, since I never offered to give you any recommendations in the first place, your disdain for me is no big loss.

Chagen46, I'm not being gay here, but I'd love to look inside your head. Oh the things I could find . . .

I'll leave the rest of the unpleasant condescension in your post post to lie, but I would rather not let this unfounded pedantry stand.

The way that EighteenSky used, "literally," has for quite a while been entirely understood and uncontroversial in the actual speaking or writing and understanding of English. There is nothing wrong with using literally as an intensifier.
