Really, Vertical? Really? This was low. Gauging the audience's interest in a drama, getting the significantly altered and watered down fap material version?
Actually, the novel has sex scenes for all three variations but that's pretty much it. (The anime, as good as it is, couldn't entirely resist some extra f/f pandering but at least they did in a more tasteful way that didn't involve gratuituous sex.) As for the manga, it's only very very loosely based on the novel, it's more like it treats the novel as a mine for some concepts and names and then it does something completely different with them. I don't mean only that it's full of gratuituous f/f sex scenes, but also that the story is different, the characters are different and the character relationships are also different. Saki turns into a shounen manga love interest girl, her relationship with Shun is blown ridiculously out of proportion (and her relationship with Maria is watered down to "they have sex all the time"), Shun takes up Satoru's role and gets most of his personality, Satoru is turned into a non-entity who is just kind of there, along with Mamoru. And of course there's no mention at all of any m/m relationship whatsoever. The story is dumbed down and rewritten to a great extent, it only keeps a few key points (but not all, and it manages to twist those that are kept as well). Based on the first two volumes, the only good thing about the manga is that the bakenezumi look more ugly. That's all. The rest is for those who want to see girls having sex, and for those who want Shun/Saki and don't care if they're different characters. I'm pretty disappointed that this will be many people's introduction to Shinsekai yori. If I had read this without watching the anime I would've never become interested in the novel. (It's bad enough that many people think that the manga is the anime's source material.) Last edited by mufurc on Sat Mar 02, 2013 5:45 am; edited 5 times in total |

So since precedent has now been set, how about some Saki? (the lesbian Mahjong one, of course)

The From the New World manga seems as though it lays its emphases on some rather different places than the anime. I have been watching the anime, but while I'm keen to see it through to the end, for some reason, I don't have a great feeling of investment in or attachment to it. Setting the sex dial to trash and flashing some breasts is not what it would take to change that.
I do feel that the 'bonobos' angle wasn't used or explored enough in the anime, being introduced, briefly exemplified, then put aside. I would have appreciate more and perhaps more 'vigorous' exemplification and exploration of it. However, that kind of concept tends to teeter precariously on the edge of trashy exploitation and the appears to push it off that cliff, which doesn't encourage my interest.
Well, it sure as Hell has me interested. I imagine that Vertical will be using the new edition's cover or something like it. And this reminded me about Helter Skelter! I must add that to my list. Last edited by Surrender Artist on Sat Mar 02, 2013 6:56 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I wish that they could have gotten the From The New World novel, instead. I definitely would have bought that. I love the anime, and want to see the source material.
I read a bit of the manga, and it was very to say the least. |

Perhaps, although the older edition isn't much more risque than the Ayako hardcover they released. I'm really excited about Pink even though I haven't read any of Okazaki's work. I did early preorder Helter Skelter just to do my part to show that we (well, I) want more josei--classic or contemporary. |

Saki is incredibly annoying in the manga.
And Shun is like a completely different character. He's basically Satoru, the action guy. Unlike in the novel and anime where Satoru is the action guy that does everything. |

Just to clear this up... We acquired this license months ago before anyone had requested the novels or the anime had debuted. We generally have books contracted at least 3 months before they are made public. And this is something we had before NYCC. |

Okay thank you for clearing that up. I was just really worried this was to gauge interest in the novel. I just hope if this doesn't sell well it won't effect the novel's potential. I mean maybe the manga will sell well but I do think different audiences will be interested. Probably a better indication of how the novel might sell would be the anime's sales (although I am not sure if Sentai will share that). |

http://www.randomhouse.com/book/93340/the-crimson-labyrinth-by-yusuke-kishi/9781932234114/ Vertical has said on their tumblr before that purchasing Kishi's novel Crimson Labyrinth is a way to let them know you'd like to see them license the novel. I assume buying the manga & this novel both would help that cause |

Well I am not buying the manga. As for buying the novel, maybe I would consider that. I have to admit based on reviews and the tagline "if you are interested in Lost or Battle Royale" it probably wouldn't be my type of thing. But if that would help the Shin Sekai Yori novel get licensed, I guess it wouldn't hurt to pick it up and who knows maybe it will surprise me. |

I'm very excited to read Pink! I hadn't heard of Kyoko Okazaki before this post, but it sounds like she's had a huge influence.
I am always excited about more josei titles being released in English. |

Oh, so something like what Hollywood could've done. No wonder people like it! |

No way. Hollywood would make all the relationships het and added chase scenes and explosions. |

Well, it wasn't anything more than This show is an egalitarian panderer, if that is what you call it.
Aren't the Monster Rats ugly enough already? They creeped me out just fine, which is rare for anime.
Last three episodes already had those. |
