As I was looking through various anime reviews on ANN, I came to the realization that for every "good" anime, there are at least some "worst ever" ratings... I've seen a couple of these, and I just can't understand why anyone would rate them as "worst ever". I mean, does it make it the worst anime ever simply because you didn't like it... At least to me, the only time I would rate something as "worst ever", would be if I couldn't see anyone liking it... something that I hated every aspect about ... something like "Super milk chan", just my opinion... Bad animation, bad plot, horrible voice acting, it would seriously need almost the whole package...
I'm not trying to persuade others to vote differently, their opinions are entirely up to them... the viewer, I was just wondering what an anime series would need to have for you to rate it as "worst ever".. In my opinion, very few animes deserve such a rating... but thats just me... |

The answer is simple actually if you watch something, and suddenly you realize it has no redeeming qualities what so ever. Than that series could be considered worst. Though there are a few problems.
Personally I would pick that original gigantor series the one in black and white. Where the animation is utter garbage, and the dialogue blows. Where the action sequences are a joke, and the storyline is a utter waste of breath to explain. You know a show truely painful to watch. You know where you watch it for a minute, and a half to feal pity for those that had to watch it when it originally aired. Now I am sure someone will come out of some hole, and look at it through the good old retro glasses, and say that series was the bomb at the time. See people use a nostalgia scale. Where the older something gets, or out of date. The more they will forgive. I refuse to do that call my a jerk, or say that my anime pleasure owes to that. I play them all on a even playing field, and as such show me the oldest anime you can find. I will promptly take it, and burn it. The truth is even the worst modern anime is a beacon of greatness compared to any anime thats ancient. Just go looking, and find one. That there belongs in the worst pile. I am a firm beleiver that as time goes on every aspect of production on any genre improves. Where the standard has gotten a little higher. Animation is expected to be at a level. The storyline has to be just a bit better. The characters have to be more alive. I also dispise most black, and white hollywood films. Usually for their one dimensional view of life, and their latent sexism, raceism, and even at times nationalism. I also hate those old disney films like steamboat mickey. |

The only one that I have voted "worst ever" was Lady Death, if one can consider it anime. I bought it because there was a lot of hype about it being a great story, blah, blah, blah...And because it was produced by ADV.
Needless to say, there was NO Japanese language track only English, the animation seemed poor and I just plain old didn't like the story. I was not familiar with the comic book/graphic novel, so that could have been part of it. But I've purchased anime just on the basis of reading the back of the DVD and have enjoyed the heck out of it, so... But, Lady Death is the only one I have voted "worst ever." About as negative as I have gotten otherwise, has been "so-so, didn't grab my attention." |

When do you usually rate an anime title? Right after finishing the title, I bet. Well, that's just it. You can't expect people to watch several (let alone tens or hundreds) titles of, say, a particular genre before rating it. What you finished watching at the moment will have the strongest impression of "the best" or "the worst" (excluding those decent titles that give you no particular black or white impression) at the particular time you're rating it. Obviously expecting complete objectivity is out of consideration - so don't focus too much on the ratings except as a "general opinion" of the majority. One or two off-the-average ratings are always bound to be around.

"Worst Ever" really is a matter of personal opinion. There are 15 votes for "Worst Ever" for Sailor Moon and I think that they are out of their minds!
As for me, I wouldn't watch ANY of the various Dragonball series even if you held a gun to my head and tied my parents to the train tracks! (well, not that drastic, but you get the point). It's all personal opinion and every person is different. |

I agree totally with you Zero. But intraweb + anoynimity occasionally gives rise to trolls who like to burn things just because they like to. A great example is the Advent Children rating. If you check the detail of the histogram, someone actually took the liberty to rate it "worst ever" in 42 languages/subs, in addition to the eng dub + sub version, and that was before it released in other languages, of course. You just occasionally get those outliers who like to mess with the system. It was probably a fanboy who was crying with disappointment because its storyline didn't live up to his expectations.
But if I honestly were to rate something worst ever, it would pretty much have to be not funny at all, devoid of a story and plot, and have terrible animation. Any decent anime shouldn't deserve to be rated that poorly. |

Why would there be? Lady Death was purely a graticious violent American cartoon outsourced by some Korean animation studio. |

Without knowing actual statistics, I would imagine there would be fewer Worst Ever votes than Masterpiece simply because most people wouldn't as a matter of course watch something they think they'll hate. My own opinion is that both ratings are very strong and should be used judiciously.

Well, my "Worst Ever" ratings are carefully considered choices only given to series or films which fail in every catagory of judgement and have absolutely no redeeming qualities to speak of. There have only been two of those, X The Movie and Ninja Resurrection if it's any comfort. I rate my titles according to how I liked them using the scale and thinking things over before I rate. Titles I simply didn't like or have faults but aren't total losses get "Weak" or "Bad".

The vast majority of the "Worst Ever" ratings in the Encyclopedia fall into one of two categories:
1) Someone trolling (happens fairly often - you wouldn't believe the crap that random idiots try to insert into the Encyclopedia); 2) Someone "hating" on a title that they just didn't like. I seriously question how many people who give "Worst Ever" ratings give any thought as to whether or not anyone else would consider the title bad or use any kind of critical standards in making that selection. (poor art/animation, bad storytelling, etc.) Although I've rated a few titles pretty low, I don't think I've given any a "Worst Ever" because I have to acknowledge that there could always be something worse or that it could just be my personal tastes. I have several anime titles with my rating of "worst ever" and I feel that they fit my judgment for the title.
Most of them feature horrible animation and a bad presentation overall, such as Beyblade and Cybernetics Guardian. However, I usually give the rating for titles that have a bad concept and/or bad voice acting. They often feature material that is controversial (Mad Bull 34), disturbing (Eiken), and/or doesn't justify as entertainment (the MD Geist films). Though I also hate how some people rate "worst ever" without even seeing the title, I feel the more severe problem is the people that give the "masterpiece" rating for about everything they have seen. It's as if believing that anime is the only well-executed animation in the world. |

that's two reasons unless you were trying to infer the last one O_o although it really depends on your definition of worst ever. I'm willing to bet a lot of people interpert it as the worst title they have seen as opposed to an overall rating. although it's less that theres no worst title as opposed to the fact it would be impossible to see every title and comapre them fairly. There is something out there that is probably worst, so when people say that it really should balance out and be completely reasonable. |

Actually I have done that, if you recall I opened up a thread about anime reviews done by me quite a while ago. Haven't done any recently but the only anime I've ever rated as worst ever is X/1999. Reasons stated are in that thread. Other than that I think I rated Xenosaga: The Animation to be a worst ever but I don't remember. "Believe it!" - IchigoK90 |

I have no "worst ever" ratings because I've never watched a series all the way through that I ever thought might qualify for such a rating. I have a general rule when I rate anime, I will not rate any anime as "masterpiece" unless I have seen it in its entirety, no matter how good I think what I've seen so far is, and it's the same for "worst ever", I can't warrant the rating unless I've seen it in its entirety. Closest I have is DBZ, which is just one above "worst ever".

When you say hating, do you mean over-reacting to a title? Or do you mean reacting negatively towards the latest anime phenomenon? Some who dislike the gushing fans of a show would probably not hesitate to show their displeasure by giving that show the lowest possible rating. Then there are people with a binary on-off mindset. It's either great or worthless. They're rare but annoying since they seem unable to comprehend that their score can tilt the averages badly. Worst case I ever saw was on Amazon where a guy wrote the book was a good overview of the subject but didn't reveal anything new to him. So in his egocentric world that meant it was worth only one star. |
