I just finished the first episode and to me it was kind of average. I'm not very familiar with the comic but as far as I know, the only connection between this series and the comic is that the Witchblade exists. I don't know if it's a subconcious mindset but for some reason the show felt American to me. I just didn't get the anime feel from it (save for near the end). Also Masane's spoiler[transformation] was rather undramatic. It just sort of happened. To me Witchblade is kind of like a male oriented magical girl series in the same vein as Cutey Honey (only not as episodic). Wasn't a bad first ep. so I'll probably stick with it for a while at least. Just wondering what everyone else thought of it.

I saw it a few days ago. Nothing really caught my attention aside from the Witchblade character design, that was pretty cool. Everything else feels a bit average, you know, nothing that really makes it stand out. But I'll give it a few episodes, see what kind of stuff develops.

The original comic is as much about the depiction of beautiful, amply-endowed women dressed skimpily and/or provocatively as it is about the whole goings-on concerning the Witchblade, so describing it as something like a much darker version of Cutie Honey wouldn't be out of line. And remember, Witchblade is an American super-hero comic aimed at more mature audiences (it can be pretty graphic) so it's not in any sense a magical girl series. |

Watched about 5-10 minutes from the start and then fast forwarded to the last 5 minutes. I wouldn't be surprised if the next episode is structured similarily to the pieces I saw. If it turns out that is the case then I'll likely pass on the series. I guess I'm in the mood for something more than just fight sequences and eye candy these days.

I'm extremely nervous to see which direction this show is heading, if for no other reason than the main character has much larger boobs than necessary. I hope there's not excessive fanservice, but...we'll have to see.

I'm going to pass on it too. One thing though, it seemed really strange for a Japanese show to have a (for want of a better term) MILF as its lead character/sex object - does that come from its American heritage?

No, the main character in the comic book is single, in her (I'm guessing) late 20s, and has no kids. A MILF as a wielder would be an entirely new twist since none of the wielders prior to Sara Pezzini were ever shown with kids. (And they tend to die young, too.)
And again, the "big boobs" thing is just a direct carry-over from the comic book, where the main character has a sexpot supermodel look. I've followed the comic book since issue 1 (on #98 now) so I have to at least check it out. Hope it's better than what it's sound like it is, though.

I thought it was kind of a funny series. It has a serious "Guyver" vibe to it, with the evil corperation and the secret "transform monsters" roaming around. Witchblade herself is pretty badass though. The key difference form the comic seemed to be that they were trying to set up a "hellmouth" for the show, so they wouldn't have to work too hard justifying disposable villains (the villains in the comic were like crime bosses, angels, and demons). I don't know, it's far from my favorite show of the season, but it's better than many of them.

I saw the anime as being a magical girl series. As far as the comic, I read the Wiki entry after watching episode one to try and get a little more perspective, and the comic itself didn't sound magical girl at all. The only things about the entry that jumped out at me were that Sara seems to be written for a male audience (with her lifestyle along with her desire for companionship) and for whatever reason the Witchblade itself reminded me of Spawn. It's definitley darker and aimed at a mature audience. But most of the magical girl elements seem to be there (in the anime) only skewed to a male audience. |

Seeing the first 10-15 mins of the ep. it seemed like some anime version of a Lifetime special whitch was really turning me off to it but them things started to get interesting. Seems there will be major drama in the serise, with the mother trying to find the daughter and what ever twists will spring forth from that. The whole mother thing I think is a breath of freash air as opposed to seeing the same type of character, this has a different feel, and on a final note it did seem alittle american, but hardly enough to turn me off from it. I'll be watching this one.

Question, I haven't seen the anime yet, thinking about checking it out. But is this the same witchblade that at one point was a god-aweful series on TBS or something like that. Same name I noticed. Anyways so beside the obvious amount of violence, does this series get any kind of substance? This more directed towards Key who is obviously a fan, and if does have a story how long would it be until it a really good arc?

I watched the first episode today. As I see it so far(I have no experience with Witchblade before today), the show could turn out to be an averagely good action show with darker undertones. I'm hoping it gets a lot darker though.
Delta, only the first episode is out if you didn't know. I believe it's going to be 24 eps, so most likely it's going to be a "developing story/monster of the week" for 10-15 episodes, really pick up and finish in the last stretch. As most 24-26 episode series go, I'm sure this will follow. |

I want to watch it but my computer doesn't like it (odd codec my player can't render, probabally h264. My PC has nothing that can make any sense of that one.
 ) I'll have to get my hands on another version. I did like the Witchblade movie this series was spun off from though and the trailer for this series looks impressive.

Kruszer: Um, what "Witchblade movie" are you referring to? I've never heard of one, unless you're talking about the pilot for TNT's TV series. And the anime isn't spun off that, it's spun off the comic book that the TV series was also based on.
As for having trouble playing it, I had to DL something called a "Matroska Pack" to get it to play right on my computer. Try hunting that down. Deltakiral: I actually liked the live-action TV series quite a bit even though it skimped on the special effects. I thought Yancy Butler was excellent in the lead role. So far only one episode of the series is available so it's hard to tell how good it's going to be. I'm not very impressed with the artistry but the story seems to be off to a solid start. And again I reiterate, there's absolutely nothing "magical girly" about this series. It's aimed at mature audiences, period. On the plus side, this one's virtually guaranteed to be licensed quickly since it will have a guaranteed audience beyond just anime fans. |
