I know that this will sound crazy, but I have not yet seen Naruto. However, being such an enthusiast for Japanese animation, I have no intention of being left out of such an incredibly popular craze, so I shall soon begin to watch the series. However, I have several questions regarding this undoubtedly awesome anime before I begin to watch it.
1. At what point (which anime episode, specifically) does the anime break away from the manga and begin a filler arc?
2. What was the point of releasing an edited version of the DVD if an uncut version will soon be released in the future?
3. Will this series be worth spending money on in the long run? It has surpassed one hundred episodes, and could possibly run for as long as Dragon Ball Z did, but this series seems to have a much better plot.
4. Are there any significant differences between the anime and manga?
If anyone could help me out here, I would much appreciate it.

I can understand the concern -- especially with all the 'filler' talk recently attached to Naruto. For the most part, you can ignore all of this because you'll have a very long time until you get this point. Without going into too many details, the filler episodes do not start until the 130s (exact episode: 136). There is a short 5 episode story arc that occurs in the 100s (exact episodes: 102-106 that is anime only but very enjoyable, and I would not call it filler). I think the reason you hear so much discussion about the filler episodes is that up until the point of where the filler begins, the series storyline is excellent and fans are now frustrated.

I don't like the idea either, but they probally think that they can make money from the younger-cartoon network crowd, more-so the parents, and know there is a huge following of the series who have watched fansubs who might be interested in collecting DVD sets of the uncut series with japanese dub/english subtitles.

Can't comment on Dragon Ball Z, but I have to say I went into watching Naruto with the premonition that I wouldn't like the series but I got hooked with the first episode, and thought the storyline, characters and overall pacing was great. Turned out to be one of my favorite anime's which I never expected. I think the fact that are releasing half-season box sets I would say if they are reasonably priced, it will be worth it

It may be just me, but when you know the series it really isn't that long (just dragged-out). Only the random, slightly pointless fillers make the series as long as it is. All it is currently is a big mass of added content (which answers question four). As for buying it, I would go with what patch said and wait for some kind of box set each season.
P.S. How many fillers did Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z have?

Dragon Ball Z had one filler, the Garlic Junior Saga.
How is that significant?

Naruto is a great series, but it is also very long, so whether it's worth it or not would depend on A: how much each episode costs, and B: how much extra money you have. Assuming they release it at a reasonable price, like say $1-1.5 per episode, I think they could well be worth the price.

Just wondering. I get the impression (from others) that DBZ has sooo many fillers.

Is this about how much episodes usually cost?

I can't say as I've only seen a small portion of the anime, but I am an avid fan of the manga. There really are very few differences that I've seen, as the anime follows the manga practically shot-by-shot. The only major differenece is, obviously, the amount of filler. So the manga has much better pacing in that respect, and isn't as bogged down. Besides that, there's the usual slightly less graphic blood and gore, and some subtle changes such as Neji's seal being changed from a swastika-like symbol (I believe it's a Buddhist symbol though) to an X. Overall, though, the anime is a "faithful" adaption if you will.

And *this* is why people's "reasons" for DBZ's overall disapproval are actually more like myths.

I did look into starting to collect the naruto DVDs. So I checked the release dates, and well 2 months between DVDs, and then only 4 episodes per dvd. I did the math, and it comes out to like 3 dollars an episode maybe a bit more. So the price is not unreasonable. It is pretty par with many box sets. You know price per episode wise.
On one hand I am enjoying naruto, and I would like to start collecting, but with the great length between episode releases, and the fact the series is well over the hundred mark hash. I personally would prefer 6 episodes per DVD, and a monthly release schedule.
Personally I could care less about the uncut version. Since I am watching the cartoon network version, and well I am not sure I could adapt. You know you get this fealing for the series, and what if the two do not jive.
Like I said the single DVDs have a fair price. I doubt your going to save so much money on a box set. Maybe ten dollars in the end since it is already so cheap. Personally though I see no real reason to get in any kind of rush. I mean it will take a year just to get 24 episodes. I am not entirely sure I want to get into that kind of commitment, and personally I see no reason not to wait for the box set. Personally I thought it would be fun to get a series one dvd at a time, as it came out. Seeing as I usually get into a series after its been fully put out. To me though looking at how their setup is. Thats just way too much time.
Anyway thats my take the cartoon network edited ones have a fair price. Although they have only just now last week released the first one. All in all though its going to take next to forever to get a good collection together for those great marathons. Thankfully with VCR technology what it is, and the fact that cartoon network is doing marathons of the series. My advice. First if you do not have a VCR pick one up. Look for one that has the functions to remove the comercial breaks. Set it to SLP, and tape the show a episode at a time or wait for one of their marathons. Then wait the year, or year and a half and buy a box set.

Actually, Dragon Ball Z had two filler sagas, the Garlic Jr. Saga and the Ano-Yo-Ichi Budokai (Other World Tournament/Goku vs. Pikkon, etc...)
Compared to the manga though, the animators put various filler events and episodes within each of the main storylines (Saiyan, Freeza, Cell, and Boo)... so they wouldn't get past Toriyama's manga while he was still drawing new chapters.
For example, in the Saiyan saga, there were whole episodes devoted to Gohan and Goku's training, not shown in the manga. Like Gohan's encounter with a robot and making friends with a dinosaur. Those were pure filler. Goku falling into Hell (HFIL) and going to Princess Snake's palace were also fillers.
And there was various filler scenes involving Roshi, ChiChi and minor characters as well as 2 episodes devoted to Bulma's Namek adventures in the Freeza Saga.
In the Cell saga, there was one noticable episode where Goku and Piccolo got driver's licenses. Also filler.
And there were a few Great Saiyaman episodes that weren't in the manga version of the Boo saga.
So, DBZ actually has quite a bit of filler, especially compared to the original manga. Not uncommon in manga-adapted anime, but in DBZ's case, it was almost too much.
Anyway, back on topic.

Well, I am caught up with the Japanese episodes current, which is on episode 178 and they are still in "filler" mode. There are a couple archs that are worth watching and I think that they are important because they will explain how naruto gets stronger with little actual time at training. And we all know Naruto has the ability to either go all out in training (such as when he learns the "Rasengan") or he just not do anything at all (such as when he is at the school). Not only that but Sakura, who is useless the whole series (so far) is undergoing training with the new Hokage (which if you remember, earlier in the series they mention how medical ninja are hard to come by because they take longer to train and have to posess certain traits to become a medical ninja). The Story Archs, where you only briefly (except one arch) see Sakura doing nothing or just chilling with Naruto (well, you do get to see minor clips where she is actually training). This allows her to re-enter the series with a lot more ability and I'm predicting a huge comeback for Sakura that will knock all our socks off!
I am not sure when they will end, but my friend who live in Japan heard something about the story archs to end somewhere in the mid 180s (don't quote me on that, it is just what I have heard). Hopefully then it will pick back with what we were left off at... Itachi, Orochimaru, and Sasuke! And I cannot wait!

I've read all of the manga that's been released and you're right on target. Sakura comes back super strong with the same amazing powers that Tsunade has. She also has healing powers that medical ninja do. Naruto comes back and is much stronger because he's been training with Jiraiya. Warning: Really Big Spoilers for People Who Haven't Read the Manga! The story comes back and they have to deal with Akatsuki (Itachi, Kisame, Deidara, Sasori, etc.). Then they go up against Orochimaru from there. That's about all the manga has gotten up to.
And I'm pretty sure that the filler arcs will end at 182. However, that is still unconfirmed.

My advice to Demon is to buy the first two box set, that is season one. And then after going thru it you will know wether you want to buy more or not. Also trust me on this that you will never regret buying the two boxes.
Its irrelevant for you to ask the amount of fillers and the difference since they are about a hundred episdoes away form you are.
For now watch the first season and ask your self wether you want to continue, trust me you might end up collecting em' all.

Please, all of the fillers in DBZ were almost seamlessly integrated into the original storyline. Not to mention that most of them are *actually* enjoyable.
Naruto on the otherhand has completely derailed. To the point where I even wonder if they'll even bother releasing the fillers in the dub.Similar to how Funimation decided to skip over most of the early Dragonball GT episodes. If people don't want Naruto to through another filler filled season in the future, the producers need to take a page from the DBZ handbook because DBZ did fillers the right way.

I'm so glad I have all the fansubs from episode 1. I love Naruto, but I couldn't imagine spending an arm and a leg for series that will be well over 200 episodes! Plus, I believe the DVD doesn't come with the Japanese version. I'm sure most Naruto fans love the Japanese cast. Too bad, I might consider purchasing the DVD if it's uncut and has the option to switch to Japanese.
