Can you guys make a feature where you can browse anime by genre? I know there is a lot of anime and each anime has more than one genre listed but is it possible to do so? It would be real nice to only browse sci fi.

So are there any plans to implement a browse by / search on all the info that's in the encyclopedia? It's a shame that there's so much data and no real way to query it properly.

<sigh> See the thread linked in the post immediately above yours. It's on the staff's "To do" list.

<sigh> See my post that you quoted.

Obviously this is on the "To do" in the sticky thread, but I wanted to hear a status update from the staff here since that thread was "Posted: Tue Mar 30, 2004."

Beg pardon. By "So are there any plans to implement a browse by / search on all the info that's in the encyclopedia?" I thought you had ignored that post in that thread—since being on a "To do" list generally means that there are plans to implement such a search. This particularly seemed to be the case since you did not ask for an update in so many words, or mention the thread at all. Basically, I responded the way I did because you did not express yourself clearly.

Also, just because a thread (post) was posted on a particular date may not mean that the owner of the site is unable to alter the content of a post after that date without an "Edited" note appearing (as is implied by "In order to keep this thread organized, posts will be deleted and summarized"—as in, "in this post").

The main holdup with the genre search is that before implenting it I wanted to re-do the genres. Instead of the current hodgepodge I want to have a few well-defined "genres" along with more flexible "themes". I'll repost and expand on my previous post, minus the demographics stuff which I don't want to touch for now. I'm not sure if the description I have here are any good. Comments are welcome.

GENRE - 1 to 3 of:
action OR adventure
*action: excitement through competition and combat
*adventure: excitement through exploration and dangerous "quests".
comedy
drama
fantasy OR supernatural OR magical
*fantasy: swords & magic, heroic fantasy inherited from the Tolkien/D&D school of thought
*supernatural: the kind of magic and monsters that have existed as part of human folklore for centuries; vampires, demons, spirits, priests, etc.
*magical: magic used as a plot device to magical girls,
horror OR thriller
*horror: tries to shock the viewer through gory, uncommon scenes
*thriller: tries to shock the viewer through suspenseful, unexpected scenes
mystery
romance
sci-fi
psychological OR slice-of-life
*psychological: exploration of a character's (or our own) psyche through intense and traumatic events
*slice-of-life: exploration of a character's (or our own) psyche through mundane and every-day events

THEMES - free input; for example:
mecha, magical-girl, police, samurai, war, sport, film-noir, martial arts, gunfights, superpowers, quest, parody, satire, crime, shounen-ai, shoujo-ai, android, etc...

It might be good to have genres or themes for "harem" and anime based on dating sims. Some people would find that those shows are exactly what they're looking for, and people like me would stay as far away as possible.

It's going to happen... eventually. But for that to happen, the basic genres need to be very well defined. That might take a while unless people give more feedback. The genres outlined above are not set in stone. Maybe some are unnecessary (mystery? thriller?), maybe additional ones would be good (space opera? parody?)

I didn't realize you wanted comments. I think it's fine for the most part but I would suggest the following.

Dan42 wrote:

*adventure: excitement through exploration and dangerous "quests".

The problem with "ORing" is that the items in question are not mutually exclusive. However, I get that you're looking for the bigger factor, so I'd say this is fine.

Dan42 wrote:

I've been thinking since comedy and drama, or a mix of both, are present in everything maybe it would be a better idea to put them in their own section like say TONE or something. Meh...maybe not.

Dan42 wrote:

*magical: magic used as a plot device to magical girls,

I'd drop magical, it's redundant for magical girl and it fits under the fantasy tag anyway.

Dan42 wrote:

*thriller: tries to shock the viewer through suspenseful, unexpected scenes

This is very difficult...these two are often intertwined.

Seems fine.

Themes
android
bishoujo - ...meh
bishounen - ...still meh
crime
ecchi
family (about family...since for family is demographic related)
film-noir
food (or cooking, whichever term you prefer)
game (specifically, Yu-gi-oh or Beyblade and not something like Air)
girls w/ guns
gunfights - what's it called...gun-fu?
harem
historical
maid
martial arts - ...would this apply to all fighting?
magical-girl - and it's "boy" counterpart (forget what it's called)
mecha
medieval (as in castle and knights) - I don't know what the Japanese equivalent would be but it seems samurai/historical would probably cover it. I guess you could go with eras, but most people probably wouldn't know them...or care to, really.
music (heavy music influence/references)
ninja
parody
pirate (including space pirates)
police
quest -> drop; anything big enough for this should already be listed as an adventure title anyway
samurai
satire
school
shoujo-ai
shounen-ai
sport
superpowers - the problem is: what defines superpower?
vampire - in the ninja/samurai/pirate vein
war -> change to military
western - very rare, but it's out there
yaoi
yuri

Dan, may I make a suggestion that you post in general anime discussion here, or a news article on the main page just for more visability?

It seems that many vistors to the site are full of opinions Wink and would be more than happy to help in making suggestions, and I feel like if you or any of the site staff were to post a request for comments/feedback in a more visable area of the site, you could get some more solid feedback.

I second this request.

Please call it "science fiction", or "SF". Calling it "sci-fi" is just plain gauche. It's the sort of thing you'll read in a film review by a critic who has no idea what he's talking about, or in advertising copy from a studio PR flack who likewise has no idea what he's talking about.

Could you simply make the genre a dual, such as Action/Adventure and Horror/Thriller? If not I would simply use Action and Horror. Most people would associate thriller as a sub genre of horror, or a theme. The same would apply for adventure. I second the idea of droping magical. The magical girl theme is a good idea and any shows magic heavy, Rune Soldier or Slayers for example, would be associated with fantasy. Even crap shows like Negima would fit there, or in action. The rest of the genres are a good idea. I would be careful how many theme you use. I'd only use the top 10-15 most common themes. You don't want too many. I would suggest;

mecha
shounen ai
ahoujo ai
magical girl
film noir
police
martial arts
satire
harem
parody
ecchi
historical
sport
vampire
yaoi/yuri
