Any word on Only Yesterday being released for R1?

I did a few searchs for this title but none of the posts that came back seemed to have anything to do with this title. Thanks-in-advance for any/all replies.

If you're talking about the Miyazaki film, it was shown just recently on Turner Classic Movies during the Miyazaki film festival. I checked on Right Stuf, they're pretty good about having movies, and they do not have anything listed.

Sorry, I guess nothing so far. But Disney seems to have a lock on Miyazaki films so maybe they'll release it.

Amazon also indicates no intention of release and gives you the option of indicating that you want to be informed when it's available - a way of letting the studio know if they have enough people who would actually buy to make the production costs worth it to them, which is understandably their bottom line.

Adult women seem to be one of the smallest demographics among anime fans (from what I remember the age and sex poll on ANN a while ago indicated that we're by far in the minority here, with high school and college age young men dominating the readership and only elderly age groups ranking lower), so it might still be a while before we see Only Yesterday and Honey and Clover released. But we can hope that maybe we'll get them sooner than we think. Studios do seem to be more willing to take risks nowadays.

Region 1 is the notation for type of dvd player in the US. Simply it is a U.S. license.

I would assume that "Only Yesterday" will be released later this year. If Disney can allow the nudity in "Totoro", then the whole menstration thing won't be a problem as well.

It also covers Canada up north there too.

As for the film I watched about half of it on TCM and changed it to something else due to utter boredom and disinterest. It's more of a chick flick than his other films and I'm a guy. I did, however, like Whisper of the Heart though which is in kinda the same boat and plan on picking that up eventually on DVD somethime this month.

Miyazaki did not direct Only Yesterday. It was directed by Isao Takahata(Grave of the Fireflies).

I loved "Only Yesterday". It is the only subbed anime to ever bring tears to my eyes. I believe that Disney mentioned that it would release it but was working on the other Ghibli movies first as they would have more of a wider audience then "Only Yesterday" which is a bit more mature in story and plot. Though my 11-year-old daughter loved it too. Wink

I'm sure that you are correct, but it WAS included in TCM's Miyazaki festival.

Since it's the only Studio Ghibli film left to release that Disney has the rights too, I believe it will make it here eventually. I don't have the link handy, but there's an interview somewhere on nausicaa.net where the English script-adaption writers state that they are interested in releasing Only Yesterday, but if they did, it would be sub-only.

Oh I wasn't challenging the validity of what you said concerning the TCM thing. I just wanted to clarify that it wasn't actually done by Miyazaki. Smile

Your both right, in a way, it was done by Takahata. However, it was included, along with his other movies, Tannuki Wars and Grave of the Fireflies in a TMC marathon about Gilbli but focusing on Miyazaki. In all three movies Miyazaki is credited with something.
That said, Takahata is wonderful. He's blessed/cursed with having the best animator of the age as his partner.

All the Best,

Nani?
