Sounds like you're thinking of the first Rurouni Kenshin OVA which was only two episodes. It was brought over here and retitled Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal due to rights issues. It was made after the end of the series as a prequel detailing Kenshins life as the imperialists top assassin know as Hitokiri Batosai. It's far more dark and serious than the television show itself.

Yes. There is a greater emotional impact in seeing the ultra-series Kenshin of the past if you've seen his gentler and more happy-go-lucky persona in the series.
Kruszer's post tells you. Two more points of note: --Kenshin was not, nor ever was, a samurai. He was not born into the social class that was capable of producing samurai, and rather was the son of poor peasants who was hired during the revolution as an assassin. --ChrisC, your grammar and spelling are not acceptable by ANN standards. Do show improvement in future posts. |

Sorry. Im just not used to typing everything out perfactly becasue im used to instant messaging.
--Kenshin was not, nor ever was, a samurai. Sorry about that, i couldn't think of any other way to say it because i forgot. I haven't seen the whole series yet (only up two 3 lol) One more thing though. Would it be labled Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal part 1 and then part 2? He mentiond something about two episodes, Also is there any films or anything to go with the series? thanks |

There's a couple versions of the DVDs out, I'd go with the one labeled Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal Director's Cut, as it has both episodes on one disc.

I always refer to him as a swordsman, which is pretty much another way to interpret the word kenshin anyway. It's pretty fitting more so than samurai, no?
Yes. Tsuioku-hen or "Trust & Betrayal" is the first OAV that serves as a prequel to the TV series. It delves into his past and shows how he went from Hitokiri Battousai to a wanderer of the exact opposite personality. However, I would also strongly suggest to you and everyone else to watch it after the series as opposed to before. The series is light, while the OAV is just a gigantic transition into a much darker and depressing world. It really gets the emotions going. And by the way, as for the TV series, I would only recommend you watch up to episode 62 (roughly volume 14 of the R1 DVDs). The 3rd season is all filler and serves no pupose to any kind of central story. The OAV portrays a reminscence Kenshin has that carries into another OAV, but the second one really stinks in comparison to what actually happens in the manga, but that's for another discussion. There's also a movie, but like season three, it's not central to anything and is really just a side story to kill about 90 minutes. Although, the timeline would probably take place after the Kyoto arc (episode 62, which I mentioned above). If you have further questions, let me know. |

Look at ANN's user rating for Spirited Away. Personally, anything rated "Very Good" or higher is worth a try.

I was just going to ask a question about the releases of Trust and Betrayal. I believe I was reading a review (here?) that said that were some changes to the director's cut that they didn't like and recommended getting the original Trust OVA + Betrayal OVA. Do you know anything about the differences? edit: was just reading more about these releases and the biggest difference is that the original OVAs were fullscreen (1.33:1 A/R) and the director's cut is widescreen (1.78:1 A/R) I'm a little concerned about this, what do you guys think about the different version? |

Well I bought the Director's Cut and haven't seen any other version of the series so unfortunately I wouldn't be able to compare and contrast the two. On the other hand widescreen is far superior to fullscreen and would definitely be my choice if I was given one.

I would agree most of the time, but my understanding is that they cropped the fullscreen version, so you're actually getting less in the widescreen version. This is basically opposite from a typical theatrical film that is presented originally in widescreen, then cropped to fullscreen. Still though, if this is what the director really wanted, perhaps this is the version to get. Thanks kruszer. Last edited by patch on Tue Feb 28, 2006 4:37 pm; edited 1 time in total |
