Why are some companies using the opening song/sequence as a trailer? That was done for Mirage of Blaze & Melody of Oblivion (as two that I can immeaditly think of). I almost didn't buy them. Did anyway, haven't regretted doing it.
Why are companies doing this. Are the Japanese trailers not worth translating? Does it cost too much to splice together scenes dubbed in English to entice viewers? In someways, the opening sequence doesn't even have anything to do with the actual anime. I have never thought that the opening for Mirage of Blaze did anything for the anime, except for hinting at the relationship between Takaya/Kagetora and Naoe. |

Can't answer that...but I do have to say that's weird.
While all openings are suggestive of the anime but almost NEVER anything that happens, MoB's opening was quite different from that actual show. Though I didn't mind it being different, the show definitely fell short of my expectations. |

Hey the opening video trailer of Texhnolyze hooked me. Sometimes it's just trying to get your attention and show the visual style of the anime. Sure some intros may have nothing to do with the animes, but some may be hooked by the opening theme or animation.

Personally, I prefer it when companies just use the opening sequence, because more often than not, the trailers they come up with on their own...suck. It's rare to see a company produce a genuinely enticing and exciting trailer, and far too often that they come up with something that's grating, obnoxious, and just as misleading and unappealing as even the most avant garde opening sequence ever conceived. Not to mention, that way you get a bunch of free clean OP & ED sequences. Which, for people like me, is a pretty big plus.

A lot of companies use the opening song as the trailer, but mix in scenes from the episodes themselves in-between shots from the opening sequence.
My best guess as to why that form of trailer is becoming more prevalent? This form of "trailer" appeases both the subbies and dubbies, as there's no voice-over either way (excluding the song vocals). |

I haven't really seen it as gaining in popularity anymore then it's ever been to use that method. Unless I just haven't watched enough trailers lately. One of the main reasons I can think of is that the original trailers weren't able to licensed, and they decided it would be too much effort to create their own. That or.. it's an introductory thing used to create anticipation, but before they've done any major work on the project over here. |

thats the same way the Bleach intro (first one) hooked me. It was extremly colorful, jumpy...it was just really cool. Then, i watched the show, and now im hooked. I also got hooked on Serial Experiments Lain this way. Good Openings can indeed sell a series  some make damn good trailers too!

Ah yes, the "Poor Man's Trailer" they probabally do it because it's less work for them and costs less than splicing footage from various points in the series togather and adding text cards. Also most trailers are created before the series has been released and they may not have the voice cast signed on yet. Or any combination of those two elements.

Although I partly agree with Nagisa, there are some original trailers which do work far better than the opener ever could. One example I would point to is Ai Yori Aoshi, whose trailer won me over to seeing that series in a way that the straight-up opener never would. (Hard to resist an advertising tag line like, "do you remember your first love? How it felt? Do you remember when you thought it would last forever?") Then of course there's series like Brain-Powerd, where the opener is not at all indicative of the series. |

Oh, certainly there are some wonderful trailers out there. CPM's Twelve Kingdoms trailer and Geneon's Paranoia Agent trailer have always struck me as some excellent examples (particularly given the nature of both shows' openings). Madman's FLCL, Geneon's Gankutsuou, Bandai's Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex, ADV's Cromartie; there are some good studio-made trailers. But I was merely saying that, in the majority of situations, it's better to just use the opening because for every good trailer a studio concocts, it also makes about 10-20 (depending on the studio) crappy ones.

I have to agree that most trailers really don't do the anime justice. The best that I've seen actually are actually the [adult swim] promos, they seem to really get you excited about a series. My favorites are the Ghost in the Shell promos, seeing those actually got me into the series.

Yes, I must admit I forgot about the Paranoia Agent promos/trailers. The one which played regularly on [adult swim] back when PA was first airing was one of the coolest and most effective anime promos I've ever seen.

Actually I just noticed this with most ADV licenses but most of their trailers on DVDs are all of the opening song sequence trailers. I have yet to see an original trailer from one of the anime that they've licensed.
