Robotech was a favorite anime of mine a long time ago. So, I really want to get it. I've learned since then that it's actually a compilation of a few different anime(same story though I guess right? It's been a long time since I saw it but I thought the entire thing is one story). Anyway, to go out and buy this, do I look for "Robotech"? Assuming it's been released to dvd...was it all uncut(or atleast now) and not tampered with? Or do I need to buy it in it's original forms?...

I'd actually prefer the dub since that's what I had before. But as dvd's go, dual audio w/ english subs would be best. Just a question that I've been wondering about and since I'm not quite sure about it, wouldn't want to blindly buy a bootleg or something.

You won't get an uncut, un-tampered version of Robotech. You might say that Robotech is the tampered version. Robotech is made up of three completely unrelated series, and was partially rewritten and edited for content and to make the three series fit together. If you're really looking for the shows in their uncut, non-tampered forms, then you'll want to buy the original series. ADV has released Southern Cross and Mospaeda, but only with subtitles. ADV has recently started releasing the original Macross with a faithful dub. But if you're really just looking for Robotech, then you can get that from ADV too.

Well as far as Robotech goes I don't believe there was ever a Japanese dub for it. A box set with all 85, I think, episodes is available. Robotech Protoculture Collection but it is only in English.

Currently ADV is releasing the original Macross, Macross DVD 1: Upon the Shoulders of Giants, which is supposed to contain a Japanese language track and subtitles. I can't say for sure, but it might be a safe bet that someday ADV will do the same thing with the rest of "Robotech". Hope that helped. If you are planning on getting the Protoculture Collection, shop around. I think I've seen it at Best Buy for like $80.

ADV already have./ ADV released Subtitle-only boxsets for Southern Cross and Mosepedea, the series that make up the second and third acts of Robotech. Animeigo remastered and released a subtitle-only version of Macross back years ago, however the license now sits with ADV, who are doing single-vbolume releases of Macross, with a new English dub and 5.1 and all of that jazz.

While one3rd, Joel, and Steven pretty much covered it, I'd like to offer a little clarification. As one3rd mentioned, Robotech was creating using 3 separate anime series. Some characters, storylines, and elements were changed to make everything fit together. If what you are looking for is the Robotech story that you have seen, then that's absolutely what you will look for. I would go for the Protoculture collection that joel linked to, if you can afford it.

If you are interested in watching the 3 separate actual anime that were used to create Robotech (but are NOT the same story as Robotech), then you would go for the new ADV Macross release, and the sub-only Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mosepedea.

Dub is all there is. Although 3 anime series are what comprise Robotech, the footage and probably the SFX track were brought over here by Harmony Gold, who created the Robotech story. In other words, Robotech is really a US creation, even though it's composed of anime. Harmony Gold basically went out and bought footage that already existed, instead of having to create the animation from scratch.

I'm not sure I'm catching the question. Is your question just what languages are present on the legit DVDs?

I knew that Robotech was odd, being made up of different series, so I thought the chance of buying a bootleg was just higher than something else. That's all.

So the series were actually DIFFERENT? I didn't know that originally they didn't link together..hm. I feel like I would be buying some bastardization of the original shows knowing they were so different at first =P I guess I'll have to think about it.

Oh yes, they were all 3 separate series that did not link together. Macross and Southern Cross do share similarities as they were part of 3 series released originally released under the 'Super Dimensional' name. But they take place in different timeframes and universes with different stories. Then there is, of course, Mospeada. Harmony Gold had to edit and rework the stories so that the separate series could fit into the Robotech timeline.

That is, of course, completely up to you, but if you liked Robotech, you might as well get it. Even though the story itself is American made, it is the series that introduced a very large portion of the fanbase into the world of anime.

You can buy Southern Cross and Mospeada for a mere $24.99 each from Rightstuf. (Yes $24.99 each for the entire series.). You can always buy the new ADV dub Macross as it is released, or you could buy the 3 sub only boxes for about $40 each.

Look, for what it's worth, the "bastardization" is done and finished with, and you're an informed person. THere was actually some care, regards to continuity and everything in general in Robotech, and even 80's "bastardizations" are still usually better than those from the late 90's early 00's. While I can't gaurantee that you'll still like the series, due to the horrendous nature of nostalgia, I do implore you to give it another go Smile (on top of that, I find the Second arc, "masters", to be a bit more coherant that it's original Southern Cross material)

Yeah I think I'm going to go ahead and get it. I think the first time I watched it...well the only time...might've just been the first 1/3 of robotech, the first series. 85 episodes? That's a pretty good amount now when I can watch as many as I want at one time and watch a good amount. But back then? 1 per day or week? There was no way I saw the entire series =P But I'm almost positive I finished the first series out.

I don't mind it being old at all. I was really into this series when I picked it up like a year ago, i always wanted to see it and they had the Robotech Macross Saga Brick for only $9.99 used at Gamestop, so i picked it up. No not a typo I really spent $10 for the 6 DVDs. The Macross Saga is episodes 1-36, Masters is 37-60 and New Generation is 61-85.

The animation is really dated but if you like sci-fi, this is one of the best series. Protoculture Collection would probably be the best way to go, although you might be able to find the older singles DVD releases for a whole lot cheaper.

Compared to 4Kids Entertainment, Harmony Gold's 'bastardization' is quite tame.

In fact, for some odd reason, I rather prefer Robotech over the three seperate titles.

If you want to see an edgier version of Robotech, ADV released Robotech Extended on DVD.

Basically they restored a lot of blood, violence, nudity cut originally for the TV broadcast. A new opening, restored audio and language track. They cleaned up a lot of the picture and remastered it.
