Who is she? I've been trying to look for her picture on google but all that turns up is a bunch of shoujo manga covers

Nitta is a prominent BL mangaka (dunno if that really answers your question, though).
I, alas, live nowhere near NY, but hurray for the people who do and have the opportunity to hit Kinokuniya for the signing.

She's a popular yaoi artist. Her manga Haru wo Daiteita is currently being published in English.
