It says he's been arrested. He hasn't had his day in court yet. If he doesn't get a custodial sentence for this it will cement my so far unproven theory that Japan is like some of the other East Asian cultures when it comes to womens' rights in society. Baka. |

Well that's ghastly. While I don't favor severity of punishment for its own sake, I hope that they don't materially laxen his sentence, should be be found guilty, on account of his 'explanation'.
Well, the alleged perpetrator was a cop, so maybe he thought that he was performing a service for the public good.
Sounds like something an anime fan would say. Of it's not necessarily true of all cases. If you're a prostitute, it might merely be theft of services. (Pennsylvania represent. *sigh*) |

Japan has a community-based ecosystem. Neighbors know each other. You have to associate with other people. That makes people feel safer that they're watching for each other.
At the same time, that also makes those uncomfortable with socializing like otaku stand out more of an oddity. Otaku tend to live in their own world and avoid being forced to associate with (what really amounts to) strangers just because they live nearby. So it's a double-edged sword. |

Its actually pretty safe, not for nothing Japan is one of the safest countries you can to live in. Like TitanXL correctly mentioned, you see little kids going to school alone, I had the opportunity to live in japan for a little bit and is something that really shocks you, the security you feel its something you can only dream on in most other countries, Japanese are maybe used to this feeling and dont fully realize it, or those that have never been in Japan may think its exaggerated..or oh surely no-one reports crime... Women ALONE past 12 am walking the streets and they fear nothing, you can go to ATMs and not be paranoid of anyone behind you waiting for the moment they can stab you or worst point a gun at you and kill you for the money, you hardly use plastic cards because anyone is save to carry small or big bucks in their wallets, you drop something on the street at you can come back later only to find it there, or safely placed nearby if its in the middle of the street with all the people walking over it. Sure some crimes may not be reported, sexual harassment, chikan, bullying probably but JP does not has the kind of crimes others are infested with. Most crimes are BIG news in Japan because they are very rare whereas in most countries they are common daily news sadly. |

Just the opposite: Japanese are sometimes way too sensitive and nervous to "suspicious" activities. The news of a stranger in a rural town could spread out to every town folk in minutes; a stranger man saying "hello" or "good day" to a schoolgirl would be reported to police.
If you ask any random Taiwanese and s/he'd reply that everything you've mentioned was quite normal and taken for granted as well. In summary, Japanese are very sensitive to potential violent crimes (thus most traveling visitors / tourists feel Japan is a safer place), but for non-violent crimes that might affect future careers of the victims / witnesses e.g. sexual harassment in classes or companies, money laundering, non-violent school and workplace bullying, etc., most Japanese (compared to Western citizens under similar situations) would choose to stay quiet instead of blowing the whistle. |
