The ad on ann got me thinking about this, and I wanted to know what some of your guys opinions were. My personal favorite out of the bunch is hell girl.

I'm still waiting for Funi to do a REAL Blu-ray series release of xxxHolic.
I know they can do it; it's widescreen, it was aired in Hi-Vision, there's just no reasonable excuse on earth for them not to.
But until they do, $18.24's not bad for a DVD box.

And only because I've already seen the first season of Kaleido Star, and I assume there are irresponsible people or newcomers who DIDN'T buy the first and second seasons of Kodocha the first time around.
(I mean, if I knew Funi was going to go all ADV on us with their early titles...)

My favorite is definitely Solty Rei. It has characters that I really like and care about, and a story that kept my interest.
Close behind that would be Utawarerumano, Bamboo Blade, School Rumble, Moon Phase and Pani Poni Dash

Some others that I enjoyed are Girls Bravo, Ikki-Tousen, Kaleido Star, Mushi-shi, and Pumpkin Scissors.

Right now I am watching Kaze no Stigma and have enjoyed the first four episodes so far.

Sands of Destruction is still in my backlog, and will probably be the next show that I watch.

I think that a lot of those got S.A.V.E. releases just because they are license rescues from Geneon and ADV, not because they previously had poor sales for Funimation.

I REALLY dislike to green S.A.V.E. spine/sticker. I only buy these sets if the other set is way too expensive or OOP. However, I love for these sets allow people to buy anime. Some people can't afford expensive sets, and it's great Funi tries to reach out to every consumer.

Pretty sure the covers have a reversible, non-green side. At least all the ones I own

Cool. I didn't even know that. Thanks!

That is good to know, as I wasn't even considering buying SAVE releases with that spine. That said, I don't usually wait before purchasing things Funimation releases. If they have something I want I've probably already got it or pre-ordered it.

You do have to be a bit careful, since not every SAVE title has it (most do though). Here's a spreadsheet of SAVE titles, courtesy of WTK.

Some of my top picks would be Rumbling Hearts, Red Garden, Heroic Age, Solty Rei, and Welcome to the NHK. All of those I rated pretty highly and were pretty entertaining. Most of the things in the SAVE line are at least worth a watch though.

Given that I own many of the titles outside of the SAVE line, I do have to say many of them are "best" to me, meaning I can easily rewatch them and still enjoy them. I just finished Bamboo Blade yesterday.

People's taste in anime is diverse, but to those who want a low-priced set of very good anime, there aren't too many which would be considered a waste of money.

What's disappointing is that the titles have a reputation of either not selling well with their initial release or are just crap. Stupid thinking, when we're talking about $20, honestly.

It's kind of strange to think of a series as solely belonging to a single budget line; I originally saw Kanon on the ADV singles, I bought the ininitial Funimation box set and then I later bought the SAVE version when it was on sale. For 13 dollars, quite a lot cheaper than the first release. Still a great series, even when it's a cheap as a Hollywood movie.

The one I think is best? Kanon? No, I thought it was great as the singes and I thought it was great in the first boxset so the SAVE version didn't change my mind about it. OK, that doesn't make any sense but look...

I'm answering at the topic question this way {as it's a bit more interesting}: What SAVE release do you own that you didn't see in any previous version or medium that made you think "Hey, this is a pretty good show. I'm glad I picked it up."? A blind buy that you only bought because it was reissued in a cheap format that turned out to be a find?

Solty Rei. I never even heard of it before buying it but I needed to fill out the order for a set gift card amount. At 12 dollars, I added it to my order thinking "It's got to be worth something. Hopefully, a least an episode or two." That was two years ago and I still watch it to this day.

If I really think about it, I like the Funimation SAVE releases quite a lot more than most of the standard releases I own. The compact and efficent case designs, the high episode count per DVD and the usually entertaining in its own right Funimation dub makes for great marathoning in either language. Unlike spindle pack releases, where just watching the second disk is a chore and disk four an unrealized dream {Disk five, six seven even, such like my Genshiken release? It's merely a myth so far but supposedly they're in there somewhere.}. Clannad? No, I'll just stick with Kanon, thank you. It's easier, really.

I agree with this so much. Most of the series I really enjoy end up in the SAVE line (Bamboo Blade and GunxSword just to name some). The only actual SAVE edition I own is Pumpkin Scissors. I put off watching it for so long that I finally decided to buy it and I'm glad I did. It's now in my Top 10 because I loved the story and characters.

I've yet to see any recommendations for Gankutsuo, Kurau: Phantom Memorie or le Chevalier d'Eon on here yet...

Tsk. Tsk

I like that they can extend a show's life by giving it a budget release, and I have enough patience to wait for them. I'm terrible with not putting much monetary value per episode into a show, because of digital backups I tend to prefer that method of watching things anyway rather than fumbling with scratchable media. I tend to collect movies and OVAs anyway, any FUNi doesn't deal much in what I favor, so I hope Sentai can eventually regrab that stash of old OVAs and give it a good box release.

I only own one, which is Welcome to the NHK, so I guess I shall pick it. I am considering picking up Gankutsuou as well at some point. All the other titles are either ones I haven't seen, ones I already own (Rumbling Hearts), or ones I don't care to own.
