Why did this take so long to get an anime, not counting the ova? Personally I dont like the series, but a. its on the most long running, b. people love it, or at least they seem to, c. its basically shonen jump x fist of the north star, easily one of the biggest demographics, d. its even had video games released in the US, outside of the big 3 SJ titles, and gundam, almost no anime based game makes it here, saying something about its popularity. So what took them so long?

From what I've heard Araki is very much a perfectionist, which has hindered it getting animation.

On top of that, it's very hard to animate it because the sound effects are one of the key things about the series. They are odd and are not the usual "BANG" or "WHOOSH".

And does this mean they'll animated part 1? What about 4 and 5?

I'm really looking forward to seeing this. I'm hoping it will continue with the later arcs if it does well enough. Araki's art evolved in interesting ways, and I wonder if that would be reflected in the way the anime would look if it continued past the initial story arcs.

Still curious which studio it is though.

If it's just the first part probably not a problem. If it goes further and adapts the entire series, I wouldn't count on it. All the references to music would be a licensing nightmare.

The first part is loaded with references to prog rock acts and Led Zeppelin, not to mention others, so there's no lack of english licensing issues from the very beginning

True, but at least Phantom Blood's references are a little more vaguely done, like how Speedwagon's specifically-initialized name is R.E.O. Speedwagon, the reference isn't so blatant otherwise, or how Zepelli's two students are called Dire & Straights. It's not until Part 2 that we get more blatant name references with the Pillar Men: Santana, Wham, AC/DC, & Cars.

I like how the placeholder image is a much more detailed designed version of the Volume 1 cover to Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. I am really excited for this Fall now.

As for whether or not this gets licensed, I for one think this can get licensed, although it wouldn't be without changing a few names first. However, I personally think all this legal paranoia surrounding characters having names that match famous music bands or artists is much ado about nothing. These are characters who have music band or artist names as just that: names. There isn't any actual music involved. Should the names remain intact, would it REALLY take away from the reputation or legacy of the artists or bands themselves? Hell no! If anything, an artist suing the licensee for just a matching name would be beyond ridiculous and would only make themselves look selfish for something that isn't tarnishing their or their music's image.

I think it's more of a potential copyrights issue. In Japan, copyrights are likely more relaxed in enforcement, not to mention that most of the music references are for, in Japan's eyes, foreign performers. But when the title comes over to where these people are based out of then there might be some potential issues. Now, Viz's release of the JoJo manga showed that most of these thought of "issues" are probably not as bad as they are made out to be, since Viz was able to keep names like Kenny G & Vanilla Ice (I'm honestly amazed that Viz was able to keep Vanilla Ice intact), but at the same time some names were still changed, like Devo to Soul Sacrifice or Oingo & Boingo to Zendatta & Monyatta (though, cleverly, this was still a music reference, since "Zendatta Monyatta" was the name of an album by The Police, so album & song titles are probably much easier to get away with), so the issue is still a valid one. More than likely, if the name referenced is either a person's actual name or is at least owned by the artist then the issues are lessened, but when a company owns the name then there will likely be problems.

Same thing happened to Bastard!!, too, both with the anime & manga.

Let's also remember how the video game adaptation to part 5, Golden Wind, was going to be shipped over here, but because of the sue happy lawyers of Metallica and especially Prince (Giorno's stand was Gold Experience, a Prince Album), the names were requested to be changed which Araki would not allow. The threat of litigation is very real, especially for an anime localization studio. None of them have the money to sate these people and the red tape to allow the names of Metallica, Gold Experience, Killer Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, White album, etc would be a nightmare. There's also the fact that Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is a niche series in a niche hobby with very limited appeal. There would be almost no profit to be made from the American market with this series. I would love to be proven wrong, but I'm very sure I won't be.

There's optimism and then there's dullability.

I'm not saying that the threat of litigation isn't real, but I do think that the issues are not as severe now as they were back then. I may be comparing apples to oranges here but I'm looking at the Zoro issue as an example of how trademark issues can be cleared with both sides coming out on top. Before FUNimation's release of One Piece, publication of "Zoro" had to be changed to "Zolo" for fear of Disney suing over the name even though One Piece's Zoro and Disney's Zorro were two separate characters. With FUNimation's release of One Piece with Zoro intact, there hasn't really been any major detriment to Disney's Zorro property. I also think this will be similar to the Jojo license. Yes, there will be names similar to bands or artists but it's just one big running gag which has no detrimental effects to legacy of the artist or band. I seriously doubt there will be any repercussions unless you have guys like Conan O'Brien who will poke fun at the bands or artists whose names match the characters in Jojo.
