My mother has two copies of Spirited Away on DVD. Both are distinctly separate editions, but we can't find where the second one comes from. We suspect that the second may be bootleg, but other than the appearance of the disc itself, there's only one of the other usual "signs" of a bootleg.

The first version is the original US release, as a 2-disc set. I know this, because I have a copy of it as well, and I bought it the first day it was released.

The second is the one we suspect may be bootleg. Here are the details on it:
*It's a single-disc set, as opposed to the 2-disc from the other release.
*Instead of a normal-sized DVD case, it's a thinpak case.
*The disc itself has that "photocopied" look that many bootlegs seem to have, especially in the booklet. The image is of the close-up of Chihiro underwater, with her and the boiler-room man superimposed over it. The logos on the disc are DVD9/dual layer, dts, Dolby Digital, and DVD Video. The title is a "written" looking font, not the official logo's font, and the "fine print" on the disc does not include copyright information.
*The case insert, however, looks legit. The images are an exact duplicate of the first release's insert, as well as most of the text. The differences are as follows:
**Bar at the top of the front and spine saying it's got dts digital surround sound.
**Circular logo with a "9" and "dts" in it, reading "Collector's Series" and "Region Quality".
**"Widescreen Edition" at the top of the back.
**Lacks one of the critic comments on the back.
**Box listing special features/technical specifications is slightly bigger.
**Box notes English, Chinese, Bahasa, and Thai Subtitles. The subtitles noted on the case are correct to the disc.
**Box also notes English DTS 5.1 Digital Surround Sound.
**The third paragraph on the back reads "This disc set overflows..." instead of "This deluxe 2-disc set overflows..."
**"Featture Running Time" is typo'd, it is not on the other release.
**Does not have the proof of purchase or ISBN. The barcode is also smaller.
**The font for the credits is different, and slightly harder to read. Also, the names are missing for Chief Executive Producer (Yasuyoshi Tokuma), Produced By (Toshio Suzuki), and Directed By (Hayao Miyazaki).
**dts is added to the logos on the back.
**All of the fine print/copyright information matches the other release, with the exception of the number between the "Made in U.S.A." and copyright logo. The first release has (29781-1), and this one has (21621-1).
**There is a lenticular/holographic design to the insert.

My mother also checked the two discs, and noted the following differences:
*The first release has trailers for Kiki's Delivery Service and Laputa, whereas the second one has trailers for Finding Nemo, Lion King, and other Disney movies.
*The first release opens with an introduction by Miyazaki, the second goes straight into the movie.

Without being able to find information on this second release, and with the typo's and extra subtitle options, my first thought goes to bootleg. However, the different trailers, and the addition of the dts surround sound makes me question that. There's no doubt in my mind that the disc itself is a bootleg, but is it a copy of a legitimate release, maybe a rental version?

Disney releases do attract fancy bootlegs, I think.

What is the region coding (if any) of the suspect release? Have you played it in a computer to see?

Haven't checked the UPCs yet, Mom was asleep last night, and I'm still in bed this morning.

Both discs are Region 1, both as stated on the box, and as played in my mom's PS2 or DVD player (not sure which she used).

It's a high-quality bootleg. I googled your upc number (well, bing'd) and it brought up a live action concert recording called Kitaro: Daylight, Moonlight.

I imagine, being a higher profile release, they put in more effort on this one.
