I've heard from other people how they hated this show for whatever reasons, and haven't seen anything for word of praise for it. Usually despite negatives, you'll have a few people who defend it, but I have not even seen that.
I saw the first couple of episodes before I saw any rants against it, so I was already interested in it, and got interested because I like transforming beast/spirit charaters, ecchi scenes, wimpy or girly male protagonists, silly romantic humor, and it was released by my favorite licensor.
With all the great stuff it had going for it, it is still blowing away expectations and I'm seriously digging it, I mean a lot. Every episode has me laughing and I feel very happy at the end of each episode. Does it get drastically worse after episode 7 or something? Or did most viewers just stop watching after episode 4 because they were disgusted with it and are judging the the whole series based on that?
I can't tell which it is because I've enjoyed EVERY episode, they each have their unique shining moments like when Chizuru said she put an extra thick spirit barrier so she can seduce Kota-kun on the roof and, Saku, her rival's big brother butted in and said he couldn't even tell there was a barrier. That was funny and brilliant because it related to an earlier episode and gave us insight into the ensuing conflict since Chizuru was Saku's previous love interest.
In comparison with this show, I've been also watching Cat Planet Cuties (several similarities to Kanokon) and I'm honestly thinking of dropping that. It's got nothing on Kanokon as far as entertainment value, it's dull and drags on with lots of technobabble, and whoever heard of a catgirl having cow udders for breasts? Chizuru has oversized honkers too, but Kanokon's just about right in terms of frequency of boob jokes and doesn't detract from the storytelling.
So in conclusion Kanokon gets an "Excellent" from me and Cat Planet Cuties (so far) gets a "Not really good."

I like Kanokon a bunch, mostly for the character designs and that the lead is more of a timid little boy than a seemingly castrated teenager that you typically get in that role. For whatever reason, two deities have picked Kouta as the one they want and they pursue him hard. What were detractors saying about it anyway? The sexual humor is uncalled far, the designs are ugly, the show isn't funny? I found it plenty amusing, and it definitely caused a lot of love for Akio Takami, which is a lot of the reason people got into Ladies Versus Butlers and Upotte (aside from the gun porn). For Asobi, the humor is much less on seducing the lead, but instead plays up the comedic value of invading alien catgirls, for what that's worth. Both series have the problem of being short adaptations of much larger works, that we'll never get to see animated.

Erm.....yes. >_> Episode 10 was what did it for me. It was no longer sick and funny, it just got very sick, too much that it stopped being funny.
Overall, I hate the series because of the theme "Rape is love" because it's NOT. Even when it's being used for comedy...to me, it just isn't funny. I strongly dislike Chizuru and think she's a terrible person.

Really? o_o I hate it for that EXACT reason.
Kouta being drawn to look that young really disturbs me and I'm even a shotacon, so yeah, that's pretty bad. I mean, I feel like I'm watching an eight-year-old kid being sexually abused!
DAT'S JUST WRONG.
Nozomu is the only character I find likable or at least amusing...
But Kanokon is probably the worst ecchi series I've sat through to completion. I just didn't care about any of the characters or the "romance"...which is harsh because no matter how tasteless other anime are, I normally end up caring about those two things just a little bit.
Gomen. But my friend? LOVES this show. He says the manga's a lot better...

Yeah most of the grief I've heard about it is related to the fanservice and all the blatant sexual stuff, and comments indicate that these viewers are completely overlooking (ie ignoring) the compelling romantic story here between yokai and human. It's a romance comedy and fanservice is intended here, I think all the sexual stuff is appropriate if you're a mature adult open to the idea of a bit of kinky stuff. It's a fantasy and lives up to that well. You go into it with that mindset and I truly think the result gives you that kind of appreciation and enjoyment, as I think you and I are in full agreement here.

I enjoyed Kanokon, I wouldn't say that I loved some of the ecchi, just my tastes, but I liked it, okay some of it was great. Some of the humor stands out was the bit where Chizuru got some students to taste her food.
I had recently watched Inukami, so I was looking for something similar. I wonder why I only gave it a "good" rating, the same as the OVA. In truth, the OVA was horrible, because they pretty much abandoned what made the show good.
Just looked up a youtube video of the opening song, seems to be quite a few that praise it in the comments. Still like the song too.

Not that I didn't like Kanokon, because it was decent fanservice, but Cat Planet Cuties has much better animation and production values all around. I think it's significantly better all around so I can't agree with your comparison. Heaven's Lost Property is probably my favorite of these kind of series though or perhaps To Love Ru...

That's my whole issue with Kanokon: this series could have had much potential but it is terrible at what it wants to call "romance". Chizuru and Kouta's relationship isn't romantic or heart-warming...it's just her forcing herself on him and trying to molest him every chance she gets and him going "No, do not want!" We don't even know WHY she's suddenly "in love" with him-it just happens for no reason at all, immediately. I hated that.

I loved Kanokon. I found Chizuru's insanely aggressive behavior and Nozomu's stoic shamelessness to be hilarious, especially given the exceedingly awkward positions they put Kouta in. In general I find extreme ecchi to be funny rather than titillating. I like Eiken and Manyuu Hiken-chou as well not because I have a fetish for that stuff but because they are so ridiculous and outrageous that I end up laughing. That's why I like Kanokon. It is so ridiculous, unrealistic and outrageous that I find it hilarious. Had it tried to take its subject matter seriously and tried to build a solid romance or explain everything I would not have been interested.

I'm not a huge Kanokon fan, but I definitely agree on that point. I don't usually like harem anime, and especially the whole "sundome" tease concept that Kanokon is all about, but the protagonist being cute and timid (voiced by Noto Mamiko no less) made it watchable for me.

I'm not sure how much of a tease is really going on in Kanokon, Chizuru wants to mate with Kouta and she does, and has a baby. That's certainly much further along than 99% of any other romantic lead in any comedic/ecchi/harem anime.

Right, but regardless of the ending it's a novel series featuring a million ways to almost-but-not-quite have sex.
I mean, it's promoted specifically as such. Its catchphrase is "the greatest sundome* work in the history of light novels" / ラノベ史上最強の寸止め作品
*sundome = "stopping at the last moment" / "stopping right at the line"

Personally I found it pretty funny, not to mention sexy and raunchy with some likable characters and enjoyed it. Even bought it and the OVA. Still I can't say it's not without flaws, the relationship is not concluded in the series or OVA or this case consummated for one, otherwise it might have earned an excellent from me. I did give it a very good though.

I'm not a big fan of the series although I found it to be pretty funny at times. I've also been reading the manga (haven't lately) and those little moments here and there just cracks me up.
Mm, I think I rated this series as "decent".

So I want to address 2 points that you brought up.
1) Kouta being so diminutive: I don't agree his small size makes him childish and that's probably because of his personality which is so reserved and rather old fashioned. He has lots of control over his urges and complements Chizuru well by counteracting her level of lewdness and lack of self control, although he doesn't do it as assertively as he should. Still he has far more maturity and a kind of nobility than you'd expect from someone who looks like an 9 year old boy. And rather than saying he specifically looks young, to me he looks that way because he's effeminate, plus Mamiko Noto's voice doesn't do much to squelch that impression.
2) Implications of rape: Yes Chizuru is very aggressive, but she never takes it too far that it could cause permanent psychological or physical harm to Kouta. She is just a very aggressive and horny girl and the level of uncontrollable love and desire she has for Kouta is natural considering if he were just more open and willing, the result would be beautiful. When Kouta feels uncomfortable with her advances and objects, Chizuru is always able to comprehend how far is too far, and Kouta always manages to make her stop. There is no way I would admire this series so much if I thought Chizuru's actions could be viewed as rape or a type of rape in the slightest.

Hmmm this is the only anime I have ever dropped after only watching the first 3 minutes because I absolutely hated the girly voice of the so called "high school" guy. But I will give it another chance because I do like ecchi romance animes and after reading the comments, it seems like an anime I will enjoy despite the guy's voice.
