No! I really like Geneon. I wonder what the cause of the lay offs were. I thought Geneon was doing financally well, but maybe I'm wrong, I don't know.

I guess the real question is whether this is indicative of the state of the US anime industry in general or just an isolated case. Didn't ADV layoff some folks recently?

there are oversaturation of anime and manga market in US....
too much competition with movies, music, and games... not to mention next gen console like Xbox 360 and PS3 is gonna divert sales from other medium like DVD and CD.... |

Even if they did go that route which is debatable, ADV seems to be doing just fine. |

eh... the anime industry in my opinion has been a bit overhyped with the 'Pokemon', 'Yugioh', and somewhat 'DBZ' craze. with the idea of being 'over-saturated', i believe its not the sense that their is so much out there, but that certain title that are similar are released really close together... I mean, Japan's got less population than the US, but a helluva lot more anime than we do, and its not like they're 'over saturated'. Things like Evangelion just now airing on TV, and the release of Fafner on DVD... the first few episodes of Faf were so easily transposed of Eva that it pretty much forced me to turn the DVD off... It would have been probably a great series if I hadn't seen Eva.. i mean the art is top-of-the-line, but if I get the sense from an anime that I've seen it somewhere before on a whole, I simply turn it off and look for something else because there are a ton more original titles I could be looking at.
The industry just got excited, and probably still think they can make anime big, but from what I see, anything they license for the older crowd has pretty much already been seen or is being watch on the very medium that made anime so popular: the internet. That's where these companies really need to start looking to market anime. Just like the music industry is doing now. Personally, I think its a losing battle to try and make anime mainstream... the conservative US masses just aren't ready for the standard that Japan offers its audience. For me, even little things like a spat of blood or a boob jiggle set some sort of idea, whether it be drama or comedy, for a scene. And by taking it out, the audience won't get the intended feeling. |
