Thank-you for the great column talking about the Toho produced Wizard of OZ animated movie. I first saw it as part of a Christmas Special movie program on KCPQ (the Seattle Fox affiliate that I get up here in BC) My mom taped it and I still have tape to this day complete with all the old school commercials. To hear your columnists describe the insipidness of the songs was bang on. My sister used to torture me with one of them which she claimed she liked, but it was only too make me mad. Even thinking about it is awful. What the columnist failed to mention though was the glory the first animated panty shot that I ever saw in my life. I remember how crazy it was to see Dorothy's whities as she fell off the Wicked Witches castle tower. Perversion aside, I remember showing this to my Otaku friends a couple of years ago and enjoyed watching them flip out over the style of the animation. As campy as this show is, it is nice to see the Wizard of OZ animated and fully imagined. I loved the way the witches and monsters looked in this show. They have quite a lot of vibrance in them. I am glad someone else has heard of this show and has watched it. Hopefully more people have too. I thought I was the only one who thought it had a lot of anime-ness to it.
I think I vagualy remember seeing this or maybe that was the tv series.Anyway Id love to see it now,The Wizard of Oz was my fav movie when I was a wee lad, mind you my fav movie changed just about everyday.I still like Return to Oz,I remember having terrible nightmares about the wheelers(I think thats what they are called)and the witch with the different heads. Also strangely I always used to get really hungry during the scene with the picnic basket trees and the scene when the emerald king was eating limestone cakes and drinking molten lime. Why I would want to drink molten lime I dont know.
How cool are the new macfarlane Oz figures. The one with dorothy in the bondage gear with the evil munchkins is a work of art.

This anime doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but what it does, it does well.― By now, Sherlock Holmes has been reimagined through the anime filter more times than I can count and to mixed levels of success. Usually, it's done more through the lens of inspiration—which is to say, having a character who's Sherlock Holmes-inspired but isn't supposed to be Sherlock Holmes. As I sit here typing this, we have t...
