while this review is excellent and true, i have to say that i collect and read the series, but hate football
i mean, no offense but the sport is not one of my favorites. for some reason however, the story uses footbal as another outlet for the characters, not really focusing everything on the game. Just like at their school, or in their homes, the game itself isnt represented in a way that can affect the reader. |

I have to agree with galaxypolice. Eyeshield 21 certainly does not target football fans, because they are almost non-existent in Japan. I for one, am definitely not the biggest football fan on the planet, and have no idea what football is until I picked up Eyeshield 21.
It's the high-energy art, the story pacing and development, the underlying subplots, and the character developments that make Eyeshield 21 such a good manga. I've read a lot of manga, several hundreds of volumes of several dozen different manga series; Eyeshield 21 has the be the best I've ever read. Anyone who hasn't read Eyeshield 21 needs to put away their prejudice "I don't like sports manga" / "I don't like football" / "I don't like sports" away, and proceed to your nearest bookstore and pick up Eyeshield 21 immediately. You will not regret it. By the way, the team the Devil Bats lost to, was the "White Knights," not "White Lions"...

Also recommending that people pick up Eyeshield 21. I hate American Football and love it anyway. It's one of those undescribably appealing manga.
And I'm also wondering about the accuracy of this review. Either Viz screwed up names in their translation or this review has some name errors. The "White Lions" should be "White Knights" and "Daimon Devil Bats" should be "Deimon Devil Bats". Can someone clarify whether Viz changed these names in their translation or if they're just errors by the review writer? |

Viz didn't change names. I own the American volumes myself.
The reviewer didn't do a very good job with names

Ohh, good to know. :D I was worried that Viz had goofed another sports manga with names. (like they did in their awful Prince of Tennis translation... not calling Seigaku "Seigaku" even when it's printed on their jerseys...) |

I guess that's part of the greatness of this manga-it's easier to make a sports manga about, say, baseball or soccer into a success because those sports are huge in Japan. But football is a sport most Japanese have barely heard of and have no idea how to play, and yet Eyeshield has become one of the most popular manga in the country. That shows you that while the games are pretty exciting, the manga's real focus is on the team and their interactions-it also helps that the series is funny as hell and does a good job of sneaking information about how the game is played into the story, so even if you're completly clueless about football, you'll know what's happening on the field.
If you think about it, football is a natural for this kind of story because it's one of the few sports where the "everyone on our team sucks except the main character" cliche would never work. Teamwork is absolutly essential in football, to the point where relying on a star player can seriously damage a team's chances, what with the heavy fatigue and frequent injuries. It lends itself very well to a story that's about a team working together. |

It's tough for me to catch on to sports manga, because-from what I've seen-characterization tends to be secondary. But I so far like what I've seen of Eyeshield.
