looking at the latest dvd i bought,wich is getbackers pt2,
it contains FIVE episodes. there are loads of animes on dvds with only 3 eps on one disc. not even mentioning the few extra's.. what would you say would be enough content for one anime dvd worthy of that price? |

Personally, it depends. If it's a series I really want, i.e. FLCL, I'll drop the $30 for a 3 episode disc. But typically, I weight it by price compared to the number of episodes on the disc.

Personally I don't really like buying anime DVDs for retail price if they only have a few episodes on them. I usually get those used/on sale. Though 5 episodes is great.

other times i look at the # of episodes in one disc. |

What's the price of the DVD? I look for prices comperable to other DVDs, so around $0.80 to $1.50 per episode. If it costs more than that, then they could include dollar bills as extras or something.

Well for me it must contain atleast 3 episodes for my 20 dollars unless what ADV did with Gantz where they dropped the price to 13 Dollars for 2 episodes. Personally I dont give a damn about interviews and opening and endings, just give me the TV series and hopefully 5.1 Surround Sound Feature and I´ll be happy. If it´s a 26+ anime series each dvd better contain atleast 4 episodes and I give it a 7 dvd limit for it to be worthy of my shelf ..... and wallet. (i bought the evangelion perfect collection for 70 dollars it was 26 episodes in 8 dvds but the price was more than worth it as are all box sets) If i get them used for 10 dollars each i dont care what it has. i bought the 8 Rurouni Kenshin Legend of Kyoto dvds for 40 dollars at my local gamestop and all 14 Robotech dvds for about 30 dollars. They all worked and it was real cheap. have you noticed that used DVDs that are with ¨real people¨ the cases are all damaged and then you see the used anime dvd case that looks like new? I bought Char´s Counterattack and it even had the slip cover and it looked like new (only 10 Dollars). Us anime fans sure take care of our anime, I know I do.

Depends on the price point.
$15 - anime episodes in both Japanese and English, clean opening and closing, trailers. $20 - anime episodes in both Japanese and English, 5.1 Dolby surround sound on at least one audio track, subtitled opening and closing song, clean opening and closing, trailers, at least one medium interest extra (character gallery, commentary, liner notes) $25 - anime episodes in both Japanese and English, 5.1 Dolby surround sound on both audio tracks, subtitled opening and closing song, clean opening and closing, trailers, at least two medium interest extras $30 - "artbox" release of $25 DVD with one gift item (soundtrack, figurine, t-shirt, etc). I'd say those are fair expectations. |

Simply put, it all comes down to how much I enjoyed a series. Yeah, FLCL's kind of a rip at two episodes per disc at the same MSRP as any other anime DVD, but it's also one of my overall favourite titles, so it's worth purchase regardless of the price:content ratio. Of course, most of the time I'll wait for the box set simply because it is a better buy money-wise (and a really nifty little package), but for me it still depends more on the show than how much of that show is divvied up per disc.

For me, the Genshiken first DVD was worth the price.
4 episodes, plus 1 episode of Kujibiki Unbalance, and video of Under 17 live as they sang the Kujibiki Unbalance theme, and wonderful presentation. |

Basically, my rule is to never pay MSRP. I either buy used or look for deals on the internet. I usually end up paying $15-20 for new DVDs and go with the cheapest shipping option possible.

For me to purchase a DVD it must be an anime that I really want to see, but finances arn't really a problem for me at this moment in time, at least not untill I have to pay for my graphics card.

Agreed. Though I admit that I HAVE found a B&M store who sells most of their anime (limited selection, but hey they have some titles I'd REALLY like to get like Last Exile, even if that selection for that series is incomplete) for $1.99/disc! I'm not kidding. The store is Hastings, and though it may only be for this one Hastings store, it's still a royal friggin' deal. Heck, I might end up picking up titles that were lower on my priority list simply because they're so bloody cheap there. |

Hastings has some good deals here as well, but the nearest store is 100 miles away in College Station, so not very practical for me to visit. In general, for me it's pretty much a mixture of price and enjoyment. If I really enjoy a series I'll sometimes pay higher prices then I could find on the net, just because there is no waiting involved. I'm also likely to try something that I don't know much about, or am not sure I will like, if the price is right. |

I'll buy anything that catches my interest, but if the price verses number of episodes is low I'll rent or wait for the box set. Of course a great series like Haibane Renmei with a low episode count/high price will overcome and obstacles.
Generally, I don't give a darn about character galleries, usually opening or closing unless there is something special about them (examples:Gasaraki with 6-7 seperate openings, closing of episode 26 Wolfs Rain with my favorite Maaya Sakmoto song ever). I do love what I call "informative extras" like commentaries, voice actor/director interviews (Japanese prefered, Americans sometimes get too cute) and additional information. Unfortunately, these are not very common for many "top of the line" series. Two examples, Otogi Zoshi had a Todai history Professor do comentary, pointing out all the historical innacuracies of the series. Meanwhile, Shrine of the Morning Mist had a piece about the area it took place in as well as a bit about Shinto Cosmology as it it related to the series but useful information for other stuff I watch, like what a Mononoke is and why Shrine Maidens dance. Those are my favorite types of extras. All the Best, Nani? |
