Not surprising, but still annoying. Guess it's finally time for me to buy Haruhi Suzumiya and Sound of the Sky while they're still affordable. I got lucky finding Planetes for a tenner a while back.

It looks like Namco Bandai is really pulling out of the anime industry, not just in the US but in Europe.
Hmmmm... is this going to lead to more companies like Aniplex of America that just handle US distribution directly from Japan?

Also I wonder how probable it is for Japanese to set up and record the English dubs, like Sunrise has done with Gundam Unicorn?

BeezUK also hinted at no new titles:

Well, Bandai contracted out the dubs anyway; it wouldn't be too different to the dub for Welcome to the Space Show which was commissioned by Manga in the UK, dubbed by NYAV Post the US, and owned by Aniplex in Japan.

At least, for Sound of the Sky you have Nozomi Ent.

Wow Bandai sure wants to be completely out of the anime market it seems. But I suppose it's better to be out before your forced out (i.e debt, chapter 7 or chapter 11).

The Western market at any rate, and only directly (they've said they will be sub-licensing so it is more like what happened with Geneon, only they will continue to distribute existing titles themselves unlike Geneon who farmed it out to FUNi).

It looks like Bandai Entertainment isn't the only company not releasing new anime and manga. Well, the way the world economy is right now,I'm not completely surprised. Hopefully, things will pick up soon and there'll be some other anime company created to bring anime and manga to the West. I guess we'll have to wait until economic conditions get better.

That's a shame, while I've found their recent releases (Tatami, 5 leaves and Girl who leapt through space especially) quite pricey their anime legends sets have been pretty good value for money.

Got a couple of things I still need to get Beez wise, wonder how the UK anime market will look come 2013...

Terrible, all that's left is Manga entertainment and MVM.

The main problem is with simulcasts now readily available, companies are generating greater expenses to have them ready on a weekly basis. While not all companies are involved in the simulcast business, the problems a lot of companies now face is that people are no longer willing to buy the dvds, BDs, or box sets simply because you can watch them online for free via these simulcasts. The average anime audience doesn't care how they watch the next episode so long as it's free and available. And once they're done watching, that's that.

The only time when you really see a huge demand for a show now is if it's a "must have" title. Something that will be memorable for ages on end and not just a one-trick book. There are unfortunately not many shows right now like that if any at all and no one except the otaku community will be going to buy older titles nowadays. Basically, Bandai's move is probably the best one available for them. This is really not a time where western anime markets can really profit as it's not originally part of their culture and is thus considered a "luxury" good. Now if conventions were getting the attendance on the level of Comiket, then I would say otherwise, but until then I don't see the western anime market lasting much longer.

This is worser then I thought, looks like Bandai is withdrawing the market from Europe also. I'm sorry my European friends. Sad

Oh goody, it's now a race between a Deaf and Dumb half bread (Manga) who's rarely possessed by the spirit of Red Rum (Kazé) and a Donkey (MVM)
