Well...lucky for them site Noir just got a rerelease, as I bet you that's one of the anime that, if it hasn't popped up already, will get their attention...

From what I know, for the most part, whatever apparent lesbian/bisexual/homosexual themes may seem to be represented in so-called Yuri manga or others, are based in fantasy romance, and not in any reality based or peception of reality or western socio-political-activist motivation.

...wow, that's great.
Right... None of those titles are yuri manga. None of their plotlines primarily revolve around lesbian relationship(s), and there isn't any porn in them. Well, I suppose you can't expect everything. |

There is already one. ALC Publishing has specialized in all-yuri manga since 2003. http://www.anilesbocon.org/ (ALC is the publishing arm of Yuricon.) |

Yay, Battle Athletes Victory was one of the 3 animes they profiled. Best show ever!
I don't understand what your point is. They're not political? So? |

I would definatly catagorize Utena as a yuri series. Although its characters sexualities seem to be all over the map (no one, but no one at Utena's school is straight, of this we can be certain. Everyone's swinging this way and that way) the thrust of the series lies in a romantic relationship between two women.
Battle Athletes and Sailor Moon are just regular series with Yuri elements though. Uranus and Neptune are probably the most famous of all yuri couples, but they're strictly supporting characters who are completly absent from 3/5ths of the series. But it's worth pointing out that I always saw their love to be much stronger and more touching than the somewhat one-sided Usagi/Mamarou relationship. It's a shame Maria-Sama Ga Miteru isn't better known in America, as that would have been a great choice for this article. |

They forgot one of the more obvious recent ones, Kannaduki no Miko.

So the article is successfully pointless.
Hahahaha... On a side note, I speculate that the vast majority of people who visit these sites and "support" this genre of animation are neither queer nor women. |

Um, no its not. It wasn't meant to spur political debate, it was meant to disucuss entertainment with lesbian heroines.
You don't know what you're talking about. Shoujo-ai fandom is easily half female. Maybe even more than half, or perhaps a little less, but the female fan population in the fandom is quite large. Hahahaha at your baseless opininon. Last edited by jsyxx on Fri Aug 12, 2005 10:19 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Battle Athletes the OVA? Yes. Battle Athletes Victory? Absolutely not. In fact the romantic tension between Akari/Itchan and Akari/Kris drives the entire plot. Its very much a story about girl/girl love wrapped up in a plot about athletic contests. Last edited by jsyxx on Fri Aug 12, 2005 11:47 pm; edited 1 time in total |

As was pointed out, it wasn't meant to be political, it was about entertainment. And actually, since it WAS about, basically, saying "Hey, you know how hard it is to find good bisexual or lesbian characters in American productions? The Japanese actually have a lot of good ones in their comics and animation"? It succeeded quite nicely. The person who wrote it is obviously an otaku to some extent, but wrote it with the intent of showing certain non-otaku a side of the fandom they might appreciate. Therefore, the article is successful, not succesfully pointless.
Your speculation is only that, and entirely wrong. Had you ever actually visited the Yuricon mailing list group on Yahoo!, or shoujoai.com, you would know that a LARGE number of shoujo-ai fans are indeed female, and many of them are gay, bisexual, or at least have felt lesbian attractions before (I still remember the time I signed up for the email club thing at this one Haruka and Michiru fansite... right after I joined, some girl posted saying she'd fallen for her best friend and didn't know how to handle it. Easily a half dozen other women responded saying that they had been in the same boat themselves at one point or another - as have I, coincidentally). In fact, one of the most popular subgenres of shoujo-ai fanfiction is basically of the theme "We don't need men; women are so much easier to get along with!" I've seen it time and time again. Also, I'm a frequent reader of shoujoai.com's fiction archive. I'm a member of the Yuricon ML. My favorite "ship" is Haruka/Michiru (I'm also fond of mangaverse Rei/Minako, though; outside of the anime and manga feild, though, my favorite is Willow/Tara...). And I happen to be female. Additionally, I happen to count myself as bi, and... oh yeah, I tend to prefer girl/girl romance to het a lot of the time, even though I read both. I'm also interested in certain series simply because they have a lesbian theme or character (and sound good or fun, of course). In fact, two of my "LOVEITSOMUCHOMG" type fandoms have lesbian characters or at least shoujo-ai themes: Sailor Moon (I cn see why it was chosen for the article; the manga especially has lesbian subtext out the wazoo... canon Haruka/Michiru relationship, the female Seiya having feelings for Usagi, Rei and Minako's and Rei and Usagi's relationships that are just crazily subtextual) and Azumanga Daioh (Kaorin! *huggles her poor little painfully shy Kaori-chan*). Though my favorite anime movie's the Utena movie. I've barely heard of Battle Athletes Victory, but it sounds good... maybe I'll give it a try, eh? Anyway, so... yeah. You're wrong. While much of the yuri PORN may be written for men, by men (hell, most het porn is written for men, too), the vast majority of shoujo-ai ROMANCE writers are female, and certainly a large section of the readership is female... they'd have to be, the stories are so often so fluffy or wangsty, few men would touch them unless they wanted to poke fun at them or mistook them for a lesbian porno fic. I will admit that the ENTIRE fandom isn't women, let alone gay women (I actually know a few women who read it because it's often very sweet and it's "something different" from all the crappy Inu/Kagome or Usagi/Mamoru stuff you get all the time, and because if you run across a romance fic instead of a porn fic, it's quite romantic and often has very good, angsty drama), but it's a sizeable percentage of the fandom. If you count both yuri sex fics and shoujo-ai romance, the fandom is actually about equally divided, with more men probably favoring the "pure porn" stuff, and more women favoring the more romantic stuff... in general. As I spend more time in the shoujo-ai romance section of the fandom, I can definately vouch for the large number of women, especially gay or bi women, who are in that end of it. -Andromeda |

Definantly get Battle Athletes Victory. I'm officially obsessed with it. One of the most character driven shows with absolutely adorable characters ever. Theres barely any anime out there that is as overtly shoujo-ai either.
Count me in with the men who prefer the romantic stuff, although I don't mind hentai either. But I'll definantly take a sappy romance over mindless fanservice. |
