Alright, I’m a college student who has just recently been sent into a craving for anime nostalgia of my childhood (thanks to Voltron news, Thundercats DVDs, and so on). I’ve covered all my old favorites but run into a huge block with one title I can’t remember. So, if you’re willing to help, I could really use an expert opinion. It was a movie, with a giant robot (of course), and I’m pretty sure there were three pilots. The pilots flew small planes/jets/whatever and docked within the robot while it was flying. I think one docked within the robot’s chest, and the others may have docked in the legs or arms. I know that’s not a lot to go on, but right now I’m at the absolute bottom with this thing. I'm pretty sure it would have been in the 80’s. I don’t know if this is the place for this type of thing and if it’s not I’m sorry, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could it be Getter Robo? Or perhaps Gekiganger 3?

This is the right place to ask questions like that, but we do already have a sticky thread specifically for this purpose. (See the Identifying Anime thread.)

As for your request, that's a little too vague to identify definitively. What you describe was a fairly common element of mecha series from the '70s and '80s.

I do remember watching a anime-like show like that a few times in my childhood but the title of the show doesnt come to mind. Actually, I dont think I ever even knew the name of it because for some reason I wasnt very interested.

Getter Robo is the only thing I can think of. Sorry.

Sorry for the inappropriate spot. I’ll just say that I found what I was looking for. It wasn’t either of the two suggenstions, but while I was checking those out I stumbled onto a site and found it. It was Go Shogun. I found some pictures of it on an Italian site and it’s definitely it. But I can’t find what I used to rent. I just find this Time Estranger that’s listed on this site and comes up with just about every search I do. But I found it anyways. Thanks, because I really wouldn’t have found it without your suggestions. Nice site too.

Sounds like Dangaioh OVA. it was originally 3, or 4 episodes and it got chopped into a movie.

The Goshogun Time Etranger OVA was shown on TV in the UK a few times, but it didn't feature the robot itself.

I'd go for something like Getter Robo...

The question is, did the robot take on different forms depending on what order they linked together?

Macron 1 IS GoShogun.

I swear, the ANN Encyclopedia is amazing sometimes.

Anyway, the way Desperate for Help is having trouble finding the stuff he used to rent suggests that he saw Macron 1. So if you look at this thread again Desperate, look for Macron 1.

The Goshogun is one of my favorite mecha in Super Robot Wars. It's Space Bazooka really rocks! Bundle is the epidemy of the Kaneto Shiozawa villain. The last episode of the series was a little strange though, no?

If you got a visual reference it'd greatly help. IMO it sounds like the classic Toshihiro Hirano DANGAIOH OVA series.

However, in that series, there are FOUR mecha planes that combine into one larger than life, mecha... DANGAIOH. There was a pathetic follow up series G-Dangaioh which most fans widely agree, stunk. Don't watch it.

Here are some pics of the original Dangaioh mecha, you will notice the style looks quite familiar if you've seen the classic anime BUBBLEGUM CRISIS OVAs from the late 80s. Many famous talented individuals worked on that series as well as DANGAIOH OVAs.

I added quite a bit of information into the ANN encyclopedia about this and other series, so reference that too.

Lastly caveat, do NOT buy or watch the butchered Manga Entertainment version of DANGAIOH OVAs. In their infinite wisdom condensed (aka DELETED) nearly half of the series, produced a horrible dub and make the ovas into a none coherent movie. PM if you need more information. Hope this helps. Very Happy

Here are some pictures for mahoro. I'm convinced that's it. Especially the third row second column, with the King Arrow (at least that's what they call it, I don't remember) being overtaken and docking within the chest. It's probably been close to 15 years since I watched this and I still remember that.
Now, I’ve got a question for Randall Miyashiro (or anyone who loves this like RM does). I’ve found some Matron 1 tapes after that title was suggested, but I’m not sure yet if it’s the same thing I saw, so let me give you this. I didn’t say this in either of my other posts because I knew it would be too vague for anyone unfamiliar with the show, but I remember one specific scene from my tape that took place in a carnival (or a carnival-like setting). One of the pilots is in a huge and dark tent (I think) and I think he may be facing the blonde dude who’s always got a rose. There was also a scene that took place at a gravesite. I know that’s probably obscure, but maybe a fan will recognize something. Thanks

I dont remember the episode. But that I'm sure that it is GoShogun. The blonde dude w/ the rose is Bundle. He also makes a appearence in Time Stranger. One thing I remember from Macron One is all the goofy 80s music. I believe they play Hit Me With Your Best Shot in one episode!
