Watch Episode 11 "Infomography" again it explains just about everything. This series sorta requires a general understanding of how the internet works and some basic computer knowledge but in short spoiler[Masame Ede invented and secretly implemented a new internet protocol that taps into an already existing force on the Earth, and the Earth becomes like a large computer network with each individual person being a computer. Then he died, and through the wired he could manipulate the real world using this. Lain also has the same power only she can do it while still alive. She can manipulate the entire world like the hard drive on your computer reseting, deleting, and overwriting people's memories. In other words Lain=god.]
