Many times i will see something "Limited Edition" being sold, i can understand it being called "Limited" and also being a numbered set such as escaflowne LE set or cowboy bebop LE set.
But there are many items out there being released as limited that are not given a #/# . I have a feeling they are limited to how many they can sell  .
Anyhow i recently got a hold of a complete X series, all 8 DVDs each with LE slip cover and the LE box. I've been searching the net trying to find how truely limited this is. Being such a weird title its hard to search for. Anyone know how limited they are? So how does it work, something being called limited but maybe its not limited at all. If it is not given a number of how many were produced, who knows right? Would the publisher give away the details? |

At times, some companies will be nice enough to put a number on their "limited edition" product.
Most of them do not have one, but I'm going to guess that the quantity they produce is based on how popular the show is and how well the companies predict the sales to be. I've seen various numbers ranging from as low as 5,000 to as many as 25,000 units of an LE box. I was lucky enough to find a used, but very well cared for X (TV) complete set like you have (with the box and slipcases) on eBay for $185 (with shipping). I think Samurai Champloo's LE Vol.1 is near impossible to find now. I saw one on eBay selling for $70. It's only been 6 months, and pending on locations, at least around where I live and on the Internet, I can't find even one for a normal retail price or lower. Meanwhile, I think the Saber Marionette J Ultimate Collection box set is still up for sale on Right Stuff. This being after the fact that it was released in August of 2003 and in a quantity of only 5,000 units (I have #3299). This just goes to prove how popularity can affect some of these decisions. But unless they actually label these (like Bandai did to my SMJ box through the form of the creator's autograph  ), then it'll be nearly impossible to know these numbers unless it's clearly marked or if someone gives us an official number from the inside.

Well i dont mean to brag or anything but i just grabbed the complete X with LE box and LE covers for a tiny $60. I cant seem to find any place selling volumes 2-8 with covers, rightstuf has volume 1 with cover and box and thats it.

I kinda feel bad when someone not so knowledgable sells something like this, a quick search of what you are planning to sell before you sell it would have revealed the error. But who am i to argue. Anyhow heres a tip for samurai champloo, i already have the LE box, but i found a new zealand merchant that has samurai champloo volume 1 with box and bandana in stock, and they ship international, for about $35 shipped you can get it, not sure the region code on the dvd but the box is identicle to the one sold in US. http://www.gpstore.co.nz/DVDs/1470707.html |

Wow, you are incredibly lucky. No one even bidded against you. I had maybe, 12 or 13 bids to fight off. But that's OK, I just look at my situation as karma for buying so many bootlegs in the past. Of course, I don't buy them anymore (nor do I have them, I sold them to my trickable friends  ), but I like to think all of the extra money I might be paying for future purchases is going towards the revenues I robbed off of the respective producers.
I also already have the Champloo box (and have had it for a while), but thanks anyway  .

well it was a buy it now auction, but i am lucky, 2 days pasted and no one bothered to buy it, i couldnt pass it up. but i still wonder really how limited those slip covers are.
Up till about two months ago my anime collection was nothing but bootlegs, i had cowboy bebop, trigun and escaflowne all HK 3 disc sets. My trigun set basicly fell apart, one disc stopped working, the case was falling apart. I finaly said forget it and when i went to replace it decided to go legit and baught the 8 disc set. And since then have baught 10 complete sets.... im an adict now

If you ask me, which no one did, LE is a bunch of bull-sh*t. I mean, what is the point of making it LE? Sure it may sell faster, but it can't sell more. The companies set a goal of selling X number of LE boxes. That means they dont want to have extra stock, but what about those who dont get to it first? I'm a little dissapointed about not getting the Samurai Champloo box, and am hopeing that they release another non-LE box later on. (sort of like what they did with R.O.D. (tv)).
To answer the topic question "how limited is limited" limited is when they say "lets only make 5000 so that are customers are fighting, balls and beer, over our products like a mindless group of docile idiots. |

man you guys are paying a lot i got my le box set for 35 dollers on ebay brand new and never used to and you guys are paying like 60 and more then 100.

sorry to break it to you but i think its impossible to get the set brand new, as each disc must be baught seperate , they never sold it as a set. and for $35 im willing to bet it was a bootleg |

I think these LE do have large drawbacks for the sellers. There is a market for them once they have gone. Like the Cowboy Bebop LE (The Perfect Sessions) is not really found anywhere so people are going for bootlegs. Sometimes without even knowing it. So in essence companies like Bandai are losing money by doing this I would think. It's actually the same thing that Disney does on their Platinum Edition dvds. Beauty and the Beast is no longer available unless you want to find it from an individual seller for a lot more money. These bootleggers and the people marking up the originals are pocketing the money right now.

thats true, if your going to make a LE you should also make a non limited alternative, there never has been a non LE cowboy bebop set. |

Yup the LE dvd box sets can hurt the sellers because pirated versions come out faster and use similar packaging. New fans not knowing but also because they don't research
 fail to realize they are doing more harm than good. We are all reasonable for supporting the anime industry we so love.
Oh and the GUNNM aka Battle Angel dvd is also quite rare, one disk I've seen it go for over $80. ONE DISC!

Good job on purchasing an illegal product for more than you should've been charged. And then announcing it on a public forum. And also supporting sellers who are probably mob-connected instead of the anime industry. What you have is a bootleg - illegal, low quality, terribly translated product. I give it a month until your discs stop working and the case falls apart. |
