Yes, that's right, Animerica isn't quite dead. Just an incredible simulation. I was in Borders today in the manga section and found the June issue of the mini-Animerica that will be seen in Borders and Waldenbooks from now on. It's pretty sad actually. It's about the size of a Communist street pamphlet with very little substance to it. So I don't see how they still print "#1 source for Domestic anime, manga & more" on it. Yeah, a couple of reviews I've already read in the magazine of manga and anime. It's about as exciting as an empty putt putt golf scorecard. They should have tried harder to save the magazine. I haven't heard a real explanation about it all yet. I would like to see how much money they were losing etc. to justify shutting it down. Has anyone seen a figure? And how much money did they bilk out of subscriptions that I'm sure they accepted, knowing they were shutting it down. I just wish there was an Independent anime mag. Newtype bows down to ADV and even Animerica was part of Viz. And speaking of Newtype, has anyone EVER read a negative review of ANYTHING in there? They aren't critical of anything they review at all. You never see a scathing testimonial about a new show or manga. It's all about how great everything is. Maybe someone needs to start a new magazine.

Personally, I'm just relentlessly praying for the day that they start bringing Japanese rock 'zines here, like Fool's Mate or SHOXX.

Newtype killed Animerica, in my opinion, pure and simple. I agree with them not being critical enough, but I also think that Animerica wasn't critical enough either. There's a magazine called Anime Insider...but I seriously don't know how it stays afloat. It's articles and colums are boring, and the review and interviews are usually too old to be considered news-breaking.

I say there just needs to be an Japanese pop-culture magazine. Throw martial arts, film, anime/manga, fashion, culture, and music all into one and it might sell better.

Sounds something like NEO magazine in the UK

Yeah, I actually picked up Neo at Barnes and Noble. It looks to be more of what Animerica could have been. Have not got a chance to read it yet. As for Anime Insider, to me it is the worst of the bunch. I was reading a letter and usually they warn you about spoilers, but this time they revealed the end of Chrono Crusade and it was partly ruined for me. And their reviews are nonexistent, they just give a little paragraph summary. And it seems to play more to the Pokemon level of anime. Maybe Neo needs to open an American branch.

Are you just looking for articles on J-Rock bands, or is there something else that these magazines do? (I'm not at all familiar with them.)

They're just magazines entirely devoted to J-rock bands. It's basically like reading Revolver here in the states. They do interviews, concert reviews, cd reviews, photoshoots, preview upcoming stuff, etc. They're pricey, but the printing quality makes Newtype look middle ages. Example: http://www.j-xyz.com/index.cfm?ProductID=2888&CategoryID=464&Category1ID=120&Category2ID=28&do=detail
