Silly.
His intro: commenting on anime first "showing up theators," where "every movie seemed to be about saucer eyed girls being violated by a critter with tenticles!" Wow, what theater is he going to?!!! Then he goes on immediatly to say that its not just for "geeky teenage boys." I thought they were into DBZ, but now i know the real truth! He sounded like a "geeky teenage boy" with his rambling about how many friends at a party wanted to borrow it, and how he watched the dubbing for image study" (HAHA, of course, why didn't I think of that!) and "I know the dubbing is pretty bad (that's not what I was thinking, the dubbing for PA is actually pretty good). and JEEZ, now that Paranoia Agent will be on Adult Swim, will I have to look forward to more reviews that start out saying this as an example that anime just isn't for kids or something? |

Reminds me of a similar incident that Scott McCloud mentions in his book "Reinventing Comics". He went on NPR with Frank Miller and the first thing the interviewer did was read out a ridiculously out of context line from "The Hard Goodbye" Sin City story. The interviewer then said that the book was full of sex and "blood and more blood".
One step at a time, people, one step at a time. This is better than no coverage at all. And yes, the Paranoia Agent dub is amazing, this guy doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. |

I was annoyed by the guy's playing to the bogus stereotype about tentacle porn, but whatcha gonna do?
And I haven't seen this show yet, but the snip of the dub he played was indeed pretty bad. Hammy and stiff. |

I'm beginning to think that we are getting to the point where established reviewers are really discovering anime. I figure they have a few years of work to do to catch up with the fans.
After all anime has been below their radar for all this time. Knowing about one or two works or directors does not really count for much given the diversity of anime. Let's hope the coverage continues to expand, and improve to the point that large eyes and tentacles are no longer mentioned. |

Argh, I know what you mean; I cringed during the intro, at least until he got into the actual story. But then again, at anime is finally getting widely recognized. |

Interviews like this (also newspaper articles, really any American press on anime or manga) always have awful stereotypes in them because the people writing or producing these things have no idea about anime at all. Anime is getting more and more attention from the press, but you shouldn't be suprised to see alot of stereotypes while it is breaking into more of the mainstream. The most annoying ones though are when they say "cartoons aren't just for kids" or something incredibly annoying like that. Although the tenticle porn one is probably number two.
