I don't know why, but Dejiko just got 100 points.

Not knowing a lot about time spans, I would think the "new" first generation of otaku (You know, the ones who waited 6 weeks for a fansubbed VHS of Ranma 1/2, etc) would fall into this category by know, wouldn't you think.

Have you played Nanaca Crash? Some of those girls are cute. Of course, my first inclination is to give them a hug. Even my fanboyisming of Ami Mizuno has waned over the years.

I understand that the girls in ythose games are adorable. (Hell, who wouldn't?) It's more of an ironic sort of thing, when you consider that many of the same girls who plaster their sites with that also consider panty shots to be "disgusting hentai".

Hmmm, 95% of the moe games aren't hentai. A very important part of the whole moe fandom has to do with "purity" of the characters.

While it's definitely sexual at it's core for many fans, the feelings moe fans have towards their favorite characters is more like a big brother's feelings for his younger sister.

Yes, but unlike most lolicom, it's not pornographic.

I'm not a fan of moe or lollicom, but I find moe to be a significantly less disturbing topic.

Well, then that probably means I'm a moe fan by the latter definition. Of course, the closest things to hentai I've watched are DearS and Melody of Oblivion (Bio-Concerto, anyone?)

Hello! Gainax?

Trust me, you haven't lived until you've seen Bio-Concerto in action (particularly with Toune) along with the reactions of 10-20some anime club members, but I digress.

The article says that moe is 1/3 the otaku market. What makes up the other 2/3?

Right now, there's a very popular "franchise" in Japan called Moetan. What it is is a series of pamphlets and study guides that help college students learn English phrases and vocabulary... through the help of a cute little girl (hence the har har name Moetan)

http://www.moetan.jp/

You can see sample pages here:
http://www.moetan.jp/moetan.html

With the way the word is used, you can say that the girl is moe, and that you are also moe for the girl.

nothing wrong with enjoying moe...

i read/watch from Card Captor Sakura to Ikki Tousen....from Galaxy Angel to Rurouni Kenshin...

just because it's mainly featuring cute girls, everyone automatically think the worst...

I've also heard of grown women with glasses being described as 'moe', so I don't think that's correct. Like Tempest said, it's more about 'pure' or 'protective' feelings towards a character than carnal self-service. Then again, some titles cross the line, such as Koi Kaze with it's taboo brother-sister relationship (but unlike lolicon titles, there's clearly a very rich characterization going on here: it's an integral part of the story and not played for cheap thrills).

People just happen to like cute young characters, and as long as it's clean, I see no problem. To be completely honest, I recently _did_ help design a slightly moe-ish character. We gave the mascot character of our magazine a bit of a makeover in honor of our first manga competition Wink

Following on, what's the etymology of "-tan"?
