Ridiculous thing is, it probably still made a profit. Probably more when added with the DVDs, the medium of choice for its target audience.

OTOH, I feel sorry for the anime in its vicinity that couldn't. Not good for the studios and animators.

It's not ridiculous. They made their money long before getting an International release.

I meant specifically the financials of releasing it in Japan. Probably minimal translation work, minimal marketing, barebones Blu-ray printing, some packaging and distribution costs, etc. Wouldn't take much to make a profit.
