It might just be my memory, but it looks like Watsuki is wearing the same outfit he wore when he appeared at Anime Expo in 2002. Maybe he's the kind of guy who finds some clothes he likes and just buys a lot of them so he has an infinite supply. Like how I eventually ended up with 3 of that year's con t-shirt because it had an original RK art on the back...

Hopefully before anyone complains, may I point out. As a live-action movie, there's some believability and realism that needs to be maintained/should be maintained and Sanosuke's sword being a massive surf-board sized monstrosity is not realistic in the slightest. Frankly I like this sword they're showing here, looks like a Mayan Sword called a Macahuitl almost or a Maori Taiha which quite fit the whole 'huge powerful and heavy sword' theme without being unrealistically unwieldy.

Ya can do anything now with modern special FX. Laughing

It's just a matter of the budget.

Imho, the best part is simply Sasaki's other tweet: "I can't post actors pictures just yet. But I assure you both Kenshin and Kaoru are super COOL !"
Now I hope Sato / Takei will be as great as this comment implies; Kenshin / Kaoru is my all-time fav pairing Smile
But it is also nice to see the scene, they did an excellent job with the dojo, and the zanbato is absolutely perfect Smile (it would be slightly ridiculous in real life with its original design Very Happy)

Not my point. My point was someone wielding a surf-board sized sword is incredibly unrealistic no matter how you look at it. I've never liked this cliche in anime because I know as a Martial Artist in real life that these swords are completely impossible to be used.

Agreed with the dojo. It looks excellent!

What lol?

When you're basing something off something that is fake to begin with you don't need to make it believable and more real.

Totally caught me off guard.

No, I think they should keep the shonen and comic stuff down and amp up the realism parts of Kenshin. I mean, wasn't that the appeal anyway? How grounded the writing was in reality?

But, I do admit that Jenai was really cool in the anime...

Which would be a point if it weren't for the fact that it's a live action movie. Because it's live action you're more likely to require/need at least some level of realism in my opinion.

if they were going for realism because it's live action, wouldn't they, oh, i don't know, use a real zanbato? apparently, you can even still buy impractically long ceremonial ones, so it's not like the design is a mystery.

i'm not saying they should have gone with something nearly as huge as the one in the anime, but something that looked a little more impressive would have been nice. that club they have pictured there looks kind of sad.

Well in my opinion at least and what I always took for the series was that Sanosuke's sword was revered and feared not because it was sharp or particularly deadly in the average sense of swords but because it was so powerful, heavy and difficult to counter with something smaller. It was the incredible power and weight behind it that made it so dangerous. What you're seeing in the 'club' design is as I mentioned like a Maori or Mayan sword and if you've ever held one of these swords you'd know why they'd be feared. If you're put into a situation where you have to parry one or be struck by it, well.. Let's put it this way.. Number one, you don't want that, you reaaaally don't want that and number two, even if you parry the strike there's probably a better than 50% chance that your sword is about to shatter like a thin piece of trash and that you're going to take a hit (albeit a lessened one, but who cares if the blow is lessened? You really think that won't still slice you up and break bones?) and you're going to regret having taken that hit.. Or not.. At least not for long..

In truth, that's a scary sword when you consider it realistically. I like it for Sanosuke because of that, I think it was an excellent choice for the sake of realism and compromise to achieve what I feel the manga and anime was trying to convey and display.

Going for realism with the Zanbato is pointless, anywas, considering how little he actually uses it. In fact, he starts becoming a fist fighter, after the sword gets broken, if I remember correctly.

I understand wanting some sort of realism, but considering the original story wasn't going for historical accuracy anyways, whats the point?

Then again, I am the same way. I watch some things, knowing how wrong the logic used in them is, and then I find it less enjoying.

It also brings up an interesting point, though. It was mentioned at some point in the manga (again, if I am remembering correctly), where Sanosuke's Zanbato comes into question, as its more oversized than a normal Zanbato. Its more like a polearm, in that aspect.

I'd personally refer to it as a combination of the two. Realistically, it couldn't really be used. But in the sense of Rurouni Kenshin, we're talking about a character whos physical strength in the series is only seconded to maybe two other characters (Seijuro Hiko, and that GIANT of a man from the Kyoto arc whos name I forgot. Maybe Anji the Destroyer is a bit more physically strong, but since he lost to Sanosuke, I am not counting him), so giving him something so asinine to use facilitates two purposes.

One, its so that enemy characters can see it and proclaim how scary and strong he is (a common thing in various anime to make the heros seem more cool), and two, it allows him to actually kill multiple people in a single blow. You've got to remember that a Zanbato is a horse slaying blade, for killing a horse and its rider at the same time.

On another point, I think what they're showing us is the physical prop for the actor to use, whereas they may do some cgi to make it larger in the final version, you know, for the ten or so minutes it might actually appear in, depending on how condensed they make this show. It'll probably cover the first or so arc since a lot of that besides major stuff can be cut out.

Ha, it does look like a cricket bat doesn't it? Or, like a big gondola oar/paddle, like in Aria. Laughing

I hope the film turns out well, it's kinda neat to see the set in development. Is it just me, or does it looks like it's being built inside a warehouse...? Shocked Better lightning control I guess. Laughing

It looks like a typical sound stage, designed for control of lighting, sound, and weather, and a little more privacy than you get outdoors.
