I personally like this anime, but at this price range - at a small episode-count ratio, sort of bugs me. I had plans on buying the entire series, but now, I'm not so sure.
I wonder if this would've happened had FUNimation licensed it.

I wonder how this will affect the release dates.
Will ADV release the DVD's faster (since there are fewer per disc) or will there still be the 2 month wait period (give or take a few days)?

Starts in Feb, and with the 2 month in betwee, expect to wait 26 month for the series to finish, so perhaps by 2007.
The price to me doesnt' matter. I rather pay more and have more episode per disc. And that's what I hate about it, 2 episode is hard to get into as oppose to watching 4 episode. It'll take a while before the whole series is out if ADV stick to thier 2 month wait period.
It's a cheap marketing tactic. When someone is browsing the DVD section, they see how cheap gantz is compare to the other shows. And if this does well, expect ADV to do it on other series.

DeepDiscountDVD will have these for $10.99 probably (free S&H) so it won't be to awful. The only really bad thing is if there is 6 weeks in between releases. This idea still sucks, they should be reducing discs (6 or less per 26 series), not more. There had to be something in the agreement.

The episode/dvd count does suck, but i'm willing to bet Gantz will be released EVERY month as opposed to every 2 months. I believe ADV did the every month technique with Full Metal Panic so hopefully they'll do it again.
If it is every other month though... That will completely blow. It will take forever to fully release. 2 episodes every 2 months doesn't tickle anyone's fancy i'm sure.

I bet they won't keep to a monthly schedule. They may try to, but they'll hit the usual snags that comes from bringing up a new volume and will fall behind. Also, all distributors have a habit of slowing down if the sales aren't there, so if people don't like it (or don't like buying 13 discs), they may stretch it out longer.
Personally, I'll wait for the inevitable brick they'll sell once the series loses it's luster with individual disc sales.

As stated previously in this thread, the situation is likely out of ADV's control. It's possible that the Japanese company wouldn't let them do it any other way in the terms of the licensing agreement.

Actually I remember the gap of volume 3 & 4 of azumanga daioh being released was only a month, regardless of what other retailers said. Azumanga Daioh took only from May To November(Instead of a whole year) to finish in 6 volumes, meaning the same thing can be done with Gantz by releasing it every month.

While it is too soon to assume a release schedule, I'm still dissatisfied by the price point (per episode - since there are other series on my radar which are priced more competitively - since I can get discounts on other series as well), and the amount of space it would take up is also an unattractive thought.

When I sat in on ADV's panel at comic-con this year they mentioned the ep count/cost depends on their cost. New Fist of the North Star was only 2 eps as I recall. Saint Seiya & GetBackers have been 5 eps per dvd while Wedding Peach has been 5 or 6.
They also mentioned with the economy the way it is in Japan, the way anime is made has changed-that much of it is being made with foreign(American & European) backing giving those companies first dibs on that title in their own country. They named 3 titles ADV had done this with, but the only one I remember now is the only one I'd heard of before-Gantz. If my memory is correct, this could explain the cost. In that Forbes article linked thru ANN a few months back, it was mentioned ADV usually pays 1-2 million per season to license a title & $10-$20,000 per ep to translate/script/dub. Possibly they had to invest more into Gantz than that.
ADV tends to run a bi-monthly schedule, but up it to every 6 weeks if the title becomes popular(Remember Jessica Calvello protesting she couldn't keep up with the increased schedule on Excel & being replaced?). I believe we've had a 4 month gap(August?) since the last Saint Seiya. Of course, with only 2 eps, they might not have as much time spent on the dubbing process. I know someone protested the length between releases & ADV said it likely wouldn't change.(Thank heavens. For those who only buy one or 2 titles, it's fine, but I always wind up following several-right now Wedding Peach, Saint Seiya, GetBackers, 12 Kingdoms, Requiem From the Darkness, DBZ, Case Closed, InuYasha, uncut YuGiOh & Shaman King & deciding on Peacemaker, Spiral. Feb starts up Saiyuki Reload.)
