The goal for the Encyclopedia is to be the most comprehensive anime/manga database on the net, right? Well, it seems to me then that it should mention when something is adapted from a pre-existing work, regardless of what format that work is.

Unfortunately, if the original work isn't itself an anime/manga (or a Light Novel, now that we've started including entries for some of those) it often isn't mentioned, and if it is mentioned, there doesn't seem to be any consistent standard as to how to do so. For example: Romeo and Juliet

There's no specific mention on the page that the series is based on a play, though it does at least credit William Shakespeare for the original story. Now, I know that 99% of the people visiting that page would already know that, but how many people would know that the following is based on a video game?

Tears to Tiara

Similiar to Romeo and Juliet, the only indication that this is an adapted work is an "Original Creator" entry buried among the other credits, but if people haven't heard of AQUAPLUS they may not even realize what that means.

Now, Gankutsuou on the other hand, makes it clear that it's based on a novel. Right below the news links is a comment referencing that fact. But then we have Kanon (the first series), which doesn't include a comment on the main page, and doesn't even have an "Original Story/Creator" credit to indicate that it's based on a visual novel. But it does mention that fact on the triva page for the series.

So my question is: what standard should we be using here?

There is an editors-only "Based on" field for each anime and manga entry. The format is: ["Title" (type of work) by Creator]; the example given ["Belle et Sebastien" (book) by Cécile Aubry]. I've entered ["Tears to Tiara" (erotic video game) by AQUAPLUS (Leaf)] for the Tears to Tiara (TV) entry.

Other, more precise credits than "Original Creator" for "原作" have been used (e.g., "Original Manga", "Original Novel", and "Original Game"), though they are as yet unofficial as far as the ANN Encyclopedia is concerned.

Edit: If you have a list of "most desired origins", I could enter them for you (in my copious free time Wink ).
