Hello people,
I recently bought the Neon Genesis: Evangelion Platinum Edition. I noticed that there were (i just spilled a crap-ton of alcohol on my keyboard just now as I attempted to grab my Evangelion Box...) director's cuts of episodes 21-24. Obviously I plan on watching both endings, but I was wondering which one I should watch first to get a better/more complete ending. Let me know what your opinions are. Thanks for your time. PS: I now I have the excuse I've been looking for to buy a new keyboard. |

The series ends on episode 26. The director's cut versions provide more info, so when you get to 21, watch the director's cut versions of 21-24 then continue normally onto 25 and 26.
Also, the movie End of Evangelion wraps up the series, so make sure you get that too (and it sort of intertwines with the events of 25-26, so just a heads up, as you may get confused). |

Be warned the end of evangelion movie has been known to cuase Uncontrollable rage, chronic depression and loosening of the bowels... simultaneously. I personally thought the ending (if nothing else) wrapped up the series neatly. But it isn't very often you witness designed only to infuriate and depress the fans of a show. Also the movie is godamn expensive (it goes for $120 new on amazon), i myself got the platinum edition and was really annoyed to discover it didn't have the concluding movie. I also might add that i didn't think the movie was to over the top with its psychological babble (the live action shots of place in japan seemed a little unnexessary though). Anyway i wish you good luck and finding and watching the movie, you'll need it.

Thanks for the replies. What about the new releases of Evangelion 2.0 and 2.22. How do those fit into the timeline with the original TV series and End of Evangelion?

They don't. They are a completely new retelling of the story.

The Director's cut episodes add a few scenes and spruce up the animation quality in some parts. You would have to be an astute viewer to pick up on what's been improved and edited when comparing the two.
After you've watched the "Neon Genesis Evangelion" series, you should also look at "Death and Rebirth" and "End of Evangelion". "Death and Rebirth" is a retelling of the series based on the viewpoints of the various characters, rather than the normal chronological order, which is a rather interesting change. "End of Evangelion", expliciates the ending of the NGE series from a rather different type of perspective (you'll understand what I mean after you've watched the two), clears up a lot of confusion that might have arisen watching the series and then confuse you in a rather different manner, and has some of the coolest fight scenes in the entire series to boot. The new Evangelion reboot is a retelling of the original anime, complete with gorgeous CGI graphics that make Evangelion look better than it ever did before. However, what seem like fairly insignificant changes at the start of the movie series begin to snowball, and the movie heads off in a rather different direction to the series by the end of the second movie. Hope this helps. |

Actually, there is a hint at the end of the second film that this "reboot" might actually be some sort of a sequel to the original series. Oh yeah, and there's that: http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?t=18075083 |

Meygaera,
You should also be aware that the Director Cuts have a different voice actor for Gendo Ikari. As for "Death and Rebirth": if you plan on watching End of Evangelion (EoE), there is no reason to see "Death and Rebirth". Death and Rebirth is actually two different shows stuck together. The first is a compilation of the entire series. The second part is the first half of EoE. Some people prefer the ending of the regular TV series. Others prefer how it ended in EoE (I am in the later group). If you want to decide for yourself (which I recommend) then you should see both the ending of the series *and* EoE. BTW, EoE has one particular fight scene which I think all fans of NGE should watch. Whatever else can be said about EoE, that fight scene is Bad Ass. (Y'all who've seen it know what I'm talking about.) |

Go for the Director's Cut. Then watch End of Evangelion, if you can find it. It's a polarizing film, but memorable and worth watching. Not to mention that it contains arguably the best scene in the entire series (which isn't even including the ending, which is really iconic.)

Thanks guys this really clears up a lot. One more question. I just noticed there is an Evangelion 1.0 from 2007. How does this tie in with everything else?
PS: One of the reasons I have been so hesitant to pickup Evangelion even though it is such highly praised, is because there are all these different movies and versions, it's really confusing. |

No problem Evangelion 1.0 is just the title of the theatrical release. And if I'm not mistaken 1.11 is the title of the home release. But yeah if you have the platinum edition just by EoE and your set. It might also be worth noting that EoE is arguably the true end of the series and the original final 2 episodes (the movie is kind of split into two parts). Basically the original ending (the one in EoE) was cancelled at the last minute because it was viewed as too controversial (by the company handling the broadcast i guess) at the time. And that's why instead we got those 2 PowerPoint weird PowerPoint episodes at the end (not that i didn't enjoy them of course). However fans were annoyed that the new ending didn't really bring any real closure to the series. That's why the director made EoE using the original plot of the final 2 episodes, to show fans the "true" end. Of course after having seen it myself I can kind of see why the network made them pull the original ending. |

My advice is don't get attached to any of the characters. They are just anime characters. |
