Now,
I heard many people in here mentioning this mang(w)a and I got somewhat interested in it. The trouble is I cant get in Poland but I can get it in December because I wil be visiting Japan then. My question to those who read it is: is it any good? I tried googling for it with many combinations of "Black and White" "manga" and "mangwa" but just couldnt find anything about it (how in the world does the term "black and white" in google finds "naked s*** in tub" is still beyond me). So just tell me what you think about B&W and what is the story about. Thanks for your help. |

Well, this is the review that made me want to read Black and White, and it pretty much says it all.
It's got a very unique art style - the kind that looks sloppy at first glance, but you can really tell that Taiyo Matsumoto put a lot into it. Really looks like nothing else on the market. Storywise, it's about these two street kids who are completely inseperable and cover up for each other's weaknesses, so a lot of different groups of people try to split them up. Except it's in this really weird town that doesn't exist and lots of bizzare things go down. The characters are very believable and realistic, Black and White has one of the best portrayals of friendship I've ever seen in a comic book. |

Ditto. Black in White is a great read. It not only manages to have a unique world and art style, but it also is one of the most touching things I've ever read. Definitally pick it up.

If you loved Black and White, you might want to check out Matsumoto's other manga, No. 5.

Thats great as well, really a brilliant work, and he has another collection of short stories being released over here soon, or so I've heard.

I figure there's enough Black and White fans here for this to be of interest to someone.
They were thinking of making a TV series based on Black and White a couple years ago, apparently with Koji Morimoto (Memories, Noiseman Sound Insect) as the director. You can download the pilot here - it's under the name Tekkon Kinkurito. Looks nothing like Taiyo Matsumoto's art style, but is still a damn fine piece of cel-shaded 3D animation. |

I think they still are, at least according to a book I have that has a section about Matsumoto. It says its in production, so hopefully it will see the light of day soon. Thanks for the link though, cool sight. Can't read French unfortunatally, but it doesn't seem like they have anything about manga on it (just interesting because of their Samura drawn background).

That's disappointing, since I heard on the IG board that Koji Morimoto is working on a feature film and a twenty-minute short, so he must not be on the project any more. And he's one of the few people that I'd trust with Black and White.

I think I read somewhere (I'm thinking its a Newtype article about Studio 4C) that Micheal Arias (american expatriate who was the animation director of the old pilot film) is now the director of this short.
As for the Black and White pilot film it wasn't made because the animation studio that did it Trilobyte Studios went out of business... since the staff was primarly studio 4C guys and Studio 4C has some money thanks to the popularity of Mahou Shojo Tai and of course the Animatrix I think its currently in production over there... I can't seem to find confirmation of this so trust me :P |

Viz is going to release Matsumoto's Blue Spring in December '04. I'm looking forward to that.
