I don't like them announcing a new one when they still have the last one to fix. Can't say I'm too excited for it, especially since I'm still playing FFXI, which took them a couple years to get right.

As a player of FFXIV and FFXI I have to agree that I don't think they should be making a new one but at the same time it's not the same team making the new one so it won't slow down the fixing of XIV or the additions on FFXI.
I just wonder what they mean by Major. Is this gonna be another MMO the size of FFXI and FFXIV? Or smaller or what. And if it is gonna be a bigger MMO what is it? I would LOVE to see Ivalice Online if done correctly but on the other hand I think 3 FF MMO's might be a bit much all at the same time. Guess time will tell.

As player of XI (on Asura) and former XIV alpha/beta tester, I have to say that this news is quite troubling. XIV could have been much better if they had actually listened to the testers. However with the flop that XIV has been, I think SE's fans lost a bit of trust in them. Also seeing the effect XIV has had on XI, loss of players moving to XIV, and condensing of servers. I worry that XI won't survive much longer if another Final Fantasy MMO is put out there.

Square-Enix needs to get it through their heads that their team is just not cut out for making MMOs. They failed with XI and failed even more with XIV, which showed they clearly did not learn from their mistakes from XI.

FFXI didn't fail. It has been a massive success for SE as a matter of fact. I has over the past 5 or so years become their most profitable title. A year or 2 after it's launch it was the 2nd highest populated MMO out there for about a year and a half.
It's also still making them tons of money as they don't need to put nearly as much cost into it to make money with it(mainly due to the outdated tech being cheaper to dev for)
FFXI is the reason SE is trying to make more MMO's. They made one that was successful and they made a crap load of money off of it and they now want to have 2-3 running making that same amount of money.

Fantasy Earth and FF XIV failed.
I hope they release something better this time.

SE never really cared about Fantasy Earth, they just didn't want to cancel it because the fans were practically begging them to complete it. They were quick to sell it fairly soon after they closed the servers down. I think the only reason SE released it in the first place was to garner some interest from a potential buyer, Gamepot released their version the same year SE did which is an oddly quick turnaround for a game switching developers. The game is still running in Asia even though the US servers have closed.
FFXIV is still unproven. It took a few years for FFXI to catch its stride and now it's going on 10 years running which is pretty impressive for a game that never once had a graphics upgrade and continues to be pay-to-play. FFXIV had a major restructuring of its development team who are making drastic changes to the way the game looks and plays. The reason why the game started off with a crawl was because (as pointed out above) us alpha and beta testers made a lot of complaints that were completely ignored while they concentrated on graphics tweaks and meeting their almighty release date. In a way it's been a blessing for the game as the new crew is much more dedicated to the players and their wants and needs.
I wonder if they're new game will be Dragon Quest based?

The original FFXI/XIV management (they made Secret of Mana, the NES FF games, and Chrono Cross) once prided themselves on their ability to make games free of outside influence. For instance, they had a policy of downplaying gamer feedback since they believed that the creator should know best.
FFXI was different in that they actually studied western MMORPGs while making their game. However, it kinda seems as if they regressed to the former mentality once FFXI became successful. From interviews, it was clear that they hadn't played any MMOs that had been released since the early 2000s, when they were still launching their first game.

I have to wonder if this new MMO is being planned because XIV is having so much trouble that it's just better to move on. Square-Enix mentioned in its most recent earnings report that revenues were lower than expected partially because they had yet to begin billing people for the game. But given how problematic it is, they'd lose all their free testers if they tried to get any subscription fees.

Somehow I doubt it. Nintendo relies so much on first party games that they aren't too likely to hand over a license to anyone.

They also said they can't afford to have FFXIV fail since they invested too much time and money into it since it's a numbered game in the series and not "Final Fantasy Online" or something. If anything I think they're so sure they can fix FFXIV once and for all that it's boosted their confidence enough to go for a third. I wouldn't be surprised if the new MMO's staff is largely made up of the replaced FFXIV staff members. Also anyone playing FFXIV right now are doing so with the understanding that eventually they will have to pay, you can't even get into the game without first setting up a separate payment account first. People know this "free" (they still have to buy the game) ride is only temporary.

Doubtful. You're talking Disney properties there and a LOT of it, and Disney doesn't own directly the full rights of some of those (like Tarzan). It'd be really pricey. And an MMO that features Disney characters and settings is something I don't see happening without Disney having serious control over (anyone recall that pirates of the carribean mmo?) And the targeted audience? Preteens to people into their 30s... the preteens would be a serious problem for Disney too, and that's not even touching the violence subject.
