I am currently looking to buy a standalone Blu-Ray player. I do have a PS3 but I don't like using it to play my anime dvds. It lives scratches on the back on my dvds. With me being OCD over my anime dvds, this causes me to not watch my anime dvds and creates a huge backlog for me. I am looking for Blu-Ray player that supports Netflix and has wifi built in. As for price point, I don't mind spending a decent amount of money. that does not mean I wanna spend a ridiculous amount.

Your PS3 should not be leaving scratches. I used mine (60GB fatty) for DVDs for quite awhile until I got a stand-alone blu-ray player and never had a problem; my family has their own PS3 (120GB slim) that they play DVDs on all the time without issue. How do you have yours oriented?

As for the actual topic, this thread is dedicated to helping people pick a stand alone player.

The ps3 does not leave scratches. It's all I use and I have none. It's upright too. The PS3 is one of the best non 3d players you can have. I'd recommend getting a new one, or alternatively, not moving it around while its playing, which will leave scratches.

I picked a good one for $500 on eBay (USD). No scratches as yet, and it plays all DVDs too. Very Happy

Any optical media drive can leave scratches, if there's something wrong with it (such as being out of alignment).

Sounds like that's what's wrong with yours. Get the PS3 repaired.

I'd recommend the Insignia NSBRDVD4. So far it's worked great, the price I paid for it was excellent, and it's internet enabled and comes with:

Netflix
CinemaNow
Napster
Pandora

Through updates, the PlayStation 3 is a viable 3D Blu-ray player. Some of the games are even 3D compatible. I can not comment on the 3D capabilities of the PlayStation 3 since I do not own a 3D TV. However, it does a great job of upscaling my anime DVDs and making them look better on HDTVs.

Also, I watch my anime DVDs exclusively on the PlayStation 3. I have not noticed any problems video- and disk-wise.

Agreed. The PS3 is probably the best player out there still.

I'll be blunt-the PS3 is a piece of crap. I say if you're going to watch bluray discs-get a bluray player. Almost any of the new ones support netflix-which to me is non essestial. Also the PS3 is a slot loader which can scratch discs-there's a roller which pulls the disc into the loader through the slot. It can get dirty and start slipping which will scratch and blemish the read side of the disc. All most all of the bluray players are tray loaders which, unless something is very wrong-will not damage a disc.

I'll be blunt- You have no [expletive] clue what you're babbling about. Piece of crap? Get a blu-ray player? THE PS3 IS A BLU-RAY PLAYER. Easily one of the best out there. Tray loaders better than slot? Hardly, Good luck playing a single thing if you break it off. Chances are you're not going to "break" your slot.

Dear person-I know the PS3 is a bluray player (among other things)-all I'm trying to say is if you want to play bluray discs it's much better to get a bluray player. The PS3 is 1st and foremost a game console, remember the PS2?-of course you do, it's claim to fame was it could play dvds. I had one but used a dvd player for dvds. The PS3 uses way too much power compared to a stand alone bluray player. So many people use a PS3 for media streaming, gaming, etc. but to me it makes sense to have seperate devices-ie-a can opener to open cans, a screwdriver to turn screws, etc.. If you have PS3 and love it-more power to you. I had one and dumped it and use a media player for downloaded content, a bluray player for blurays and dvds, etc.
