I was reading the news on http://www.cartoonresearch.com and they had a list of animated short films on the "short list" for an Oscar nomination. I clicked on a link for one of the films on the short list, Mt. Head, and ended up at the website for the animator, Koji Yamamura. He's been rather prolific, too, and at first I thought he was similar to American animators, where they work for a commercial animation studio and do little independant productions on the side. Yet, his filmography defutes that.

So now I'm wondering. Are there any other independant Japanese animators working outside of the anime industry?

Obviously the most famous independant animator would be Makoto Shinkai (of Hoshi no Koe fame), but I've heard that there's a pretty good "underground" in Japan for short films. Also, there's a lot of independant animators or small studios that do subcontracting work for big studios, and I guess they work on their own projects in their spare time.

Thanks, Dan! I was worried that this topic would fly over everybody's heads and go unnoticed.

I just love independant animation, and wondered if anybody knew of any from Japan. I completely forgot about Hoshi no Koe; I have only seen a tiny piece of it, and I suppose I should watch the rest of it sometime.
