Any opinions? I don't consider myself otaku with this guy's definition of the word. I mean, I love anime and all but that doesn't mean I should start listening to Japanese music or wear Japanese clothes. Although, I admit I like Japanese food but I already liked it before I became an Anime fan. I don't hate or dislike otakus. Some of my friends are otakus although they act weird sometimes. |

As far as im concerned; you shouldnt hate otakus just because they like the japanese culture; and were all anime fans here so lets not fight over somthing so stupid.

I like to think that there are different levels of "otakudom" just like there are different levels of "geekdom". There's the "Casual Otaku" who knows their way around anime, but have no intent of being anything more; the "Intelligent Otaku" who take it all in, are willing to share everything they know, but in no way obsess and show patience, these are the follks who tend to try getting into the industry and actually have a chance of succeeding at it; the "Obsessed Otaku" are the ones that tend to get the most attention, these are the people that have to have everything and anything right now, anime is all good and none of it's bad and even at it's worse it's always going to be better than anything else out there, these are also the people who keep Petition Online in business; Then you've got the "Violent Otaku" these are the idiots that make empty threats of violence towards other fans, especially if they disagree with what they absolutly know is fact, they're also the same morrons who suggest bombing corporate offices because something was edited out of a kids show, they deserve to be shot. Of course there are other types of otaku like the "Elitest Otaku" or the "Newbie Otaku", but these are the most common types I find.
I think this guy's website is missguided and maybe he's even a bit insecure about his own fandom. Rather than accepting that there are different people out there ("different strokes for different folks") he'd much rather alienate them and show his superiority. I'd call him a "Casual Otaku", however a missguided one, complaining about the obsessed and violent among us. By his description I, and many others here, are not an otaku even though I happily claim to be one. Emerje Last edited by Emerje on Wed Sep 01, 2004 7:47 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I agree. You shouldn't "dislike" otakus because they like the Japanese culture. We all like different things. My friend likes anything that deals with Jamaica and its people. I don't care, I'm not going to hate you because of what you like. |

I admit it, I harbor some ill feelings towards the average self-styled 'otaku.'
For starters, I know what the word actually means and have actually met people in Japan who qualify for the label. These people who proudly attach it to themselves are idiots. It's not something nice to say about a person.... Secondly, I'm mainly talking about the idiots who love anything and everything Japanese, but know nothing about the people, culture, or country. People who have tattoos of stuff, but clearly don't realize what it means. Nothing satisfies my black heart more than looking at some person's kanji tattoo and noticing that they messed up the character, or (even better) that the characters are upside down. Those are the people I hate.... |

That was the longest sentence I've ever seen. Anyway, I to think there are different levels. A violent Otaku shouldn't be the path one takes. You shouldn't get mad at someone because they are a newbie in the anime world and don't have a lot of knowledge about anime. You should help them and increase their knowledge. Anime is something that can bring people with a common interest together and share their joy. Last edited by frostedsaiyan on Wed Sep 01, 2004 7:50 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I agree. While I don't consider myself an "otaku", I don't hate them. The reason is they're still anime fans though they're just obsessed with it. |

Heh. You should read The Subterraneans. Longest. Sentences. EVAR. I don't want to get into a big debate at the moment, so I'll just say I agree with him and leave it at that. |

Lets face it there are people who take it waaaaay too far and there are others who find it annoying (like me).
The best way to do deal with it is wear urban camoflage and don't let them know that you have the same interests. Avoid conversations you don't wish to be invloved in. They stay oblivious, you stay happy, end of story. Unfortuately there are good reasons for fans to be weary of Otaku. A personal example involved a person in my religous organization who found out I was a fan and tried to use it to imply I was inmature at a public meeting. I simply stated a few other things I was involved in and my accomplishments and let the subject drop. It had the proper effect. The fact that it was implied that my interest caused me to be put in the same catagory as the girl dressed as Witch Hunter Robin or the boy with cat ears on (real people I've encountered) was not fun and did not make me more sympathtic to the annoying types of Otaku or self rightous social bullies. I haven't found a solution to everything, but not everything is your fault or problem. Try not to let it bug you and show by word and deed your not the same. And remember they have the same right to breath the air as you do. All the Best, Nani? Last edited by Nani? on Wed Sep 01, 2004 8:32 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Well, I personally don't like the idea of ranking anime fans. If you're a fan of some particular concept, whether it be anime or whatever, then so be it. However, being a fan should only matter to the person who says he/she is a fan. Putting yourself or someone else into a higher or lower status just because of their knowledge or preferance seems a little unfair.
Of course there are some cases where it may seem necessary, like the concept of the "fanboy," but I guess that depends on a case to case basis... . |

Uran Dictionary defines Otaku as:
Here in America most people view the word Otaku to be used as a compliment. It's a common misconception. Being an Otaku is bad. It's much better to be an anime fan of healthy fandom. I know I wouldn't want the term used on me and I really hate it when people with no knowledge of the word call themselves "Otaku" It puts them down and shows a lack of intellegence to other anime fans and Japan. I'm not an otaku and wouldn't like to become one. I enjoy my anime to a healthy degree, having a small but enjoyable social life, friends, going outside, and staying in shape. I suggest everyone tries to do the same if you want to live a happy life regardless if you watch anime or not. |

I don't think I am an otaku with all of the definitions everyone has provided above. I wouldn't wear Japanese clothes ever, I love Japanese food, love anime. But. I think all I am is an anime fan. I don't stay home much, and I do have a life, USED to have a love life , and I like Japanese music, mostly anime music albums. They have very strange definitions when it comes to "Otaku"

I don't listen to the Japanese music like I listen to American music, but I sometimes enjoy the Japanese intros to animes like Fulmetal Alchemist.

The way I see it it's no different than anything else. Not everyone who plays a sport is a pro, but they're still athletes. Not everyone in the millitary is a grunt, but they're still soldiers. Not all anime fans are elitists, but they're still otaku. Emerje |

otaku no jinsei ha yabai na! (it sucks to live the life of an otaku!)
A good saying.
I agree with you 100% I become outraged when people who have the audacity to call themselves "Otaku" know nothing of Japan's customs, cultures, or rich detailed history. It's sicking and even worse then when people who are ignorant to anime put it and Japanese culture down because atleast they are being true to themselves. It just gets me so mad that I sometime get to the point where I wish anime had just stayed in Japan so it wouldn't have to be put up to this injustice. I really need a chill pill. |
