Stink Bomb (movie) | Not really good | Starts off as not-quite-plausible sci-fi, then quickly becomes ridiculous. In the end it's not much more than a well-animated farce. |
(The) Story of Saiunkoku (TV) | So-so | Was discussed in the contest threads. Well, it certainly has lots of slash possibilities. Not sure I will like it. It has a 'feminism' tag, but I wonder how that's going to work out, given the setting and Shuurei basically being sold to be the emperor's wife. This anime's so full of dudes. Shusui and Kourin are the only women besides Shuurei, and they hardly get any screentime. While it is an entertaining anime, I find it disconcerting how many decisions and other important information are kept from Shurei, whom it most concerns. It's almost as if they don't take her seriously. On the other hand, Shurei gets an awful lot of help from just about everyone. She hardly has to lift a finger to resolve matters, even the ones she's officially in charge of. For an anime that's supposedly about her struggle to be an official, she has an amazingly easy time of it. Well, Shurei just got threatened with rape, then knowingly went to visit the guy at his house. She got rescued in time (of course), but now she seems to seriously consider him romantically. Wtf? This second arc is drawn out endlessly. And there are some plot holes that are just glossed over. |
Strain: Strategic Armored Infantry (TV) | Excellent | That's SF for you; lots of world-building info at the beginning. I watched the first ep. twice to catch all the details. Whoa. That was quite epic. The story was very tight too. Figures, as it was written for the anime, not adapted from a manga. Another one for the to-buy list. Watched this again, from DVD. Funimation's way of localizing anime isn't exactly to my liking. Here they replaced the OP and ED with English credits. The main Japanese credits are there translated, but not the lower ranks. They also replaced the logo not just on the box, but even in the OP/ED/eyecatch. The translation seems okay, although a bit looser here and there than I'd prefer. The 'extras' on disc seem to have been written by someone who watched the anime as opposed to someone from the creative team. If they're going to create their own extras it'd be quicker to just copy the character&mecha designs and be done with it. This interpretation of the story I can figure out myself. Anyway, the anime is still good. It takes a bit long for Seira to get out of her shell. Understandable after what she's experienced, but her not saying anything at all makes her a bit less likeable for the first half of the series or so. The ending could've been a little longer, but I suppose this suffices. |
Strawberry Marshmallow (TV) | Decent | Is this what is meant by 'moe'? It's cute though. Yes, it's cute, but I found the cuteness sometimes was laid on too thickly, which made it stupid. I mean, Matsuri-chan being clumsy now and then is funny, but her acting like a complete idiot isn't so much. Also, it's normal for everyone in anime to look younger than they actually are, but Ichigo Mashimaro took it too far. Nobue looks like she's 16 or so, and the rest look/act like they're maybe 6 or 7 years old. Overall this anime was sort of okay, but I got a little bored with the lack of plot within episodes. |
Strawberry Marshmallow (OAV) | So-so | See Strawberry Marshmallow. Most notable difference between the series and this OVA is that the clothes are more frilly/impractical. If this is what 'moe' is like, I think I'll stick with regular cuteness, thank you. |
Strawberry Marshmallow Encore (OAV) | So-so | PJ reminded me that I hadn't seen this OVA yet. The art seems a tiny bit different from what I recall. Otherwise it's just more Ichigo Mashimaro. I dunno, watching this anime makes me wonder exactly what audience it is aimed at. I'm not sure would like to meet them. |
Strawberry Panic! (TV) | Good | It's okay. Nice to see some girl-girl romance again :) The plot wasn't always great. The little girl with the teddy bear was the cutest I think. I would've liked to see more of the Lulim (Le Lim? Le Rim? spelling seems to vary) students anyway. |
Sugar Sugar Rune (TV) | Decent | Chocolat's voice is cute ^_^ The heterocentrism is a little off-putting though (girls can only capture boys' hearts and vice versa; ugh). Ah, ep. 25, the bad guy(s) finally make their entrance. I was starting to wonder if there'd be any. Well, the ending took a long time to build up and less than half an episode to finish off the main bad guy. The epilogue was too short and just reset some things to the way they were at the start. Meh. This was certainly one of the worse magical girl anime I've watched. It wasn't the worst, and it was worth watching, but definitely not close to competing for third place. |
Suite Precure (TV) | Very good | Awkward introductory exposition is awkward. As such introductions nearly always are, so this one's not really much worse. By now the whole PreCure concept is getting a bit cliché, but it's still exciting to see them transform and kick ass all the same ^_^ Tsubomi was supposed to be history's weakest PreCure, but Hibiki and Kanade haven't improved as much as I'd expect by ep.11. See, I was right about Siren. Disappoint that she can't become a fairy anymore though. Milk could use some company in that department. Rockin' theme though :) This season's Cures have bad taste in headgear. Eps.30 and 31 are low quality filler. Like in HeartCatch, they're waiting very long to add the last Cure. I'm afraid that leaves too little time to make her really a part of the team and develop her character. Basically her whole backstory was explained in just one ep. One of the better ones certainly, but it's still hurried. And that's twice now they've damselled Aphrodite. Once in the movie, now in the series. Both times it was Mephisto showing up to save her, not the main heroines PreCure. Come on, please let that bad old trope die already. The finale was postponed and postponed again for about four eps. before they finally got to finish off the big bad. And that went rather without fighting. Not a bad thing, but it kinda matches the tameness of battles in this season. Then, basically a whole ep. to end the story, which is good (although at the end they used some stock transformation footage to fill time). What disappointed me most this season is that they didn't turn Siren back into a fairy. Her turning human and not being able to transform back was not explained at all back when it happened, and no one even seemed to wonder if she'd want to turn back or anything. Ako staying in the human world was at least sort of excused by her going back to her life with Otokichi before. It would've been neat to have another fairy Cure like Milk. |
Sukeban Deka (OAV) | Good | Hmm, the art is an old and peculiar style. The set-up is a little contrived, but so far the story is okay. Not great, but Saki is pretty cool at least. The balance between the two halves is a bit off. The first half is mostly character introductions and only a little fighting, the second half is nearly all action all the time. It could've been stretched over three eps. I think. This anime feels like it's part of a longer series. Some background is left out it seems. Anyway, this was a satisfying tale. Not sure yet if I want to own it. (just in case: link) |
Summer Wars (movie) | Very good | Mamoru Hosoda's latest movie. Ugh, I got an atrociously low quality version it seems. Ah well, it'll have to do for now. Part of the OZ introduction looks a lot like Superflat Monogram. Natsuki's family is very funny together. All in all the story is not super deep, but quite satisfying nonetheless, with a nice mix of action and comedy. The art and animation are great, although I can't properly appreciate them like this. I wish I had the DVD already. |
(The) Super Dimension Fortress Macross (TV) | Decent | Whoa, it looks so '70s. Or is it early '80s? Ancient in any case. Low-quality animation, outdated hairstyles, damsels-in-distress who get saved by heroic oafs, and overly dramatic storylines. I bet the makers of SDF-Macross thought Buck Rogers and Star Trek looked pretty cool. I don't know if I'll really watch all of this. It's so bad that it's funny at times, but I doubt that'll last 36 eps. Maybe there's a condensed version somewhere? The echo effect whenever someone is speaking in a large space is annoying. The science in general is rather flawed. Aside from sound in space and wings in space, there's also TV broadcasting in a metal ship that can be received outside it. The social attitudes shown are disgustingly primitive. In short, only watch this as an introduction to the Macross franchise or for hysterical raisins, but don't expect it to be anything good. Watching a second time: Ep.14 is purely recap. Ep.17 reuses animation to tell an alternate fragmented dream story. Creative, but basically still a recap. Basically there are three parts to this series. Up to ep.14 it's the voyage back to Earth. Then follows the culture shock and war part. After ep.27 there's a timeskip to two years later and the focus is more on the love triangle, with rebuilding as a background. The last part is not covered by the movie (if you can call it covering the first parts). It's a bit boring compared to the earlier battles, and Hikaru's waffling between Minmay and Misa is stretched a bit much, but it's part of the Macross history, and the conclusion is decent. |
(The) Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? (movie) | Not really good | It distorts the original SDF Macross story rather a lot and is definitely not as deep. It is however the source of some things referred to in later Macross anime. An interesting watch for the Macross trivia fans, but not a real substitute for the SDF series. The TV series may have had some archaic attitudes towards women at times, but the movie is really bad. Several times minutes are spent just showing off cool animation. Nice to look at, but it doesn't really add to the story, which was already severely shortened and twisted here. Watch it for the animation and to learn the source of Exedol's look and the "Yack, Deculture" exclamation, but don't take it as a substitute for the TV series. |
(The) Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Flash Back 2012 (OAV) | So-so | Mostly a music video of Minmay songs playing over footage from both the TV series and the DYRL movie. Near the end there are a few new scenes of Minmay packing for Megaroad-01 while remembering (hence the Flashback) packing for SDF Macross-1, then Megaroad-01 lifting off captained by Hayase. Not much of an addition to the Macross history, but Hayase looks cool as a captain. |
Super Mobile Legend Dinagiga (OAV) | So-so | Another OVA that never got finished. This one at least has a somewhat satisfying ending, even if it is very short. |
Superflat Monogram (movie) | So-so | Came across this while I was looking up some movie directors in the encyclopedia. It's only five minutes long, so I decided to check it out. Ah, so that's what they mean by 'superflat' style. It looks a bit too artsy to be of much use in general anime, but I can see some connection to The Girl Who Leapt Through Time's art. This short movie is really more of an ad/music video. Not bad, but not really amazing or special either. |
Sweet Blue Flowers (TV) | Excellent | AKA Aoi Hana, a well-known yuri series. I just watched the first ep. Aww, this is going to be wonderful, I just know it. The art is beautiful too. I really felt for Fumi. She's so sweet. Wow, finally finished it. Series take so long when you watch them while they're still airing/subbing. The ending wasn't really what I expected, but I suppose it can't be helped with only eleven eps. It was still wonderful though. And the art is just gorgeous. I hope there'll be a sequel some day. |
Sweetness & Lightning (TV) | Good | Slice-of-life. Saw a random clip that looked adorbs. Maybe it'll be nice? The first ep. was okay, though Tsumugi doesn't quite feel like a real kid. She's cute though. The basic form of each ep. is random food related event in Inuzuka family→sensei talks with Kotori→Kotori & sensei come up with a meal→cooking together→everyone eats and says it's yummy. Hmm, this was more about cooking than Koufuku Graffiti actually. That anime had a lot of food stuff, but they didn't show very much of the meals being made. This one still had the eating bit at the end (but it wasn't so ero-poi), but actually showed the cooking. Dialogue was a bit stilted sometimes. Tsumugi sometimes felt a little too mature, sometimes too exuberant, but you get used to it. Overall I liked it better than I expected to at the beginning. |
Symphogear (TV) | Decent | Second season (SZS G) is said to have a lesbian character. Hmm, the first ep. is very actionful and dramatic. A little bit confusing though. It starts in 'present', flashes back to, uh, a few years ago, then it says it goes back to 'present', but apparently it's still before the first part :? Ah well, ep.2 will probably clear things up. So far it wasn't super fanservicey. This kind of outfit is nothing unusual for action anime, and isn't even much beyond standard magical girl outfits. There is an 'ecchi' tag on it though, so it'll probably get worse :/ Hmm, there's definitely a lot of male gaze going on, sometimes pretty badly even. Plus there are a few times when Ryouko gets inappropriately touchy-feely. So I guess it does deserve the 'ecchi' tag after all. Not that this is good, but it could've been worse. Ep.9 is a 'day off' ep., which is a bit of a waste in an anime with only 13 eps. Maybe they won't finish the story and instead continue in G? There's certainly a bunch of unexplained details yet. Hmm, the last few eps. were a little messy, what with the back and forth between winning and losing. Decent ending though, and the first part of ep.1 was finally explained too. All in all, if it weren't for the fanservice/ecchi, this would make a decent modern magical/action girl anime. With it, I'd only recommend SZS if you're able to ignore it. |
Symphogear AXZ (TV) | Decent | Seems only Commie subbed it completely so far, and they were really bad with key terms in previous seasons :( Looks like another group is subbing the BDs. They're up to #6/ep.12 now (2019-01-09). Seems like they're only slight edits of Commie's though. Updated batch hopefully soonish. Well, it looks like the key terms thing has become inconsistent. The early eps. have Commie's old substitutions, the later ones don't. Meh, whatever, it's the only set available. The fanservice isn't as bad as in GX, but still very noticeable. The three Alchemists being trans isn't really mentioned after that one remark about getting perfect bodies. It's sad that they didn't join the Symphogear group at the end but instead got to nobly sacrifice themselves. Bury your transfolk it seems :( Speaking of which, that return of Cagliostro and Prelati at the end was pretty badly written. The writing felt worse than earlier seasons. You expect some second and third forms of the big bad, and extra hidden superpowers from the good folks, but the last three eps. here stretched it out a bit too much. The last half of the last ep. was full of sequel hooks, but I guess that's natural if S5 and S4 were announced at the same time. I hope we get to see the Alchemists again, but I doubt it. They didn't get enough depth really :( Anyways, it's otherwise a decent addition to the franchise. VX in three months (or six until it's finished and subbed I guess). |
Symphogear G (TV) | Decent | Aw, the last ep. of the first season's new powerup is already gone. Ah, so this season is going to be 3 vs. 3. And that bad guy-looking guy from ep.1 was indeed a bad guy. So far (ep.7) it's pretty good. There is a lot of very noticeable "as you know Bob" talk though. Well, overall it's partly not so good, partly awesome as before. The not so good aspect is the writing, which is kinda clumsy (that "as you know Bob" thing, a few dues ex machina plot saves, a few "random pointless remarks that somehow keep the heroines from doing their thing", etc.). The good aspects are the kick-ass music, and the ass-kicking fights it accompanies. The characters are likeable, but the opponents don't get much depth really. The lesbian character(s) I was promised (no idea by whom though) didn't exactly occur. Kirika and Shirabe are pretty close, but it's the sort of close that can too easily be explained away as friendship. |
Symphogear GX (TV) | Weak | The first ep. is spectacular as usual. Again some "as you know Bob"-ing though. All this losing is getting annoying. Even with the new powerup the girls are getting their asses kicked. Or powering up through suffering in some cases. Still not really the unfettered ass-kicking we want to see. Another theme this season seems to be daddy issues. Hibiki gets most of it, but Tsubasa also has her moments. Oh, and Carol of course. Really, the writing this season is just awful. The explaining things to eachother, irrelevant macguffins, a plot that wanders without aim, characters who act completely out of character for as long as the plot requires, forgotten experiences, etc. etc. Overall, season 1 was okay, S2 was slightly less but still tolerable, S3 is bleh. Only watch it if you want completeness. The music on the other hand is still kickass. |
Symphogear XV (TV) | Good | Starts Summer 2019. Just in time to have to rewatch the whole series? Well, I ended up rewatching everything anyway because of the game. New season, new set of enemies. Too bad none of S4's opponents survived. S3 at least gave us Elfnein. Regrettably predictably, the enemy trio from this season went the noble sacrifice route as well. Well, at least we got to see Carol&Elfnein in their gear again, and Miku got her gear back at the end too. The final eps. were a bit messy, but that's not really new I guess. A decent end to the series. |
Takamiya Nasuno Desu! (TV) | Not really good | Basically the same as Teekyuu except with just Nasuno and Youta (Yuri's brother) as tsukkomi? Well, this wasn't as fun as Teekyuu actually. It seems there's such a thing as too random. |
(The) Tale of the Princess Kaguya (movie) | Decent | Beautiful art and very good animation. The story is so-so though. I'm not sure what is from the original fairytale and what has been added (I've only read some summaries of it, never read the original), but it is kinda boring (as can be expected, stretching a fairytale over 2h17m), and has some sudden turns that don't make much sense to me. But it definitely is pretty. |
Tamayura (OAV) | Very good | Directed by Junichi Sato. Ah, this is more like Aria than Umi Monogatari was. With some Kamichu mixed in. The moe is quite thick in this anime, but not too much so (like Strawberry Marshmallow). I read that a longer series might be made later on. That would be really nice. |
Tamayura - Hitotose (TV) | Excellent | SatoJun delivers another great iyashikei anime. Truly a worthy successor to Aria. Let's hope Nozomi picks this up as well and gives it the same treatment. There are some interesting extras on the Japanese BDs. |
Tamayura - More Aggressive (TV) | Good | Hmm, so far I feel like this continues the tone of the last ep. of ~hitotose~, a little self-indulgent in reflectiveness. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I hope it regains the spontaneity of the earlier eps. I wonder how much of a sixth ranger Kanae will be. Overall, this season kinda lost its focus. In ~hitotose~, the focus was on the group of four, with extra focus on Fuu. ~more aggressive~ pushed the other three out of focus, but didn't really move to anyone in particular. It was still about Fuu, but aside from her, it just hopped around without really giving enough attention to any subject. The photo club's start was the focus for a while, but we never got to see their daily activities much. There was an ep. about getting pics for a contest, but nothing came of it, and no further contests came up. Likewise for the exhibition with Shihomi. The trip with Kawai was shown only half, and a big part of that ep. showed the B&B off. Kanae I was afraid would steal the show away from the original group, but it turned out we never really get to know her, aside from some fears. This anime just kept shifting around without giving proper resolution to any subject, while treating the first season's core group as side characters. In addition, a whole lot of time was spent dwelling on Fuu's dad. You get the impression he was some kind of saint the way everyone and their neighbor keeps going on about him. I get that Fuu wants to get to know him a little better, but it's hard to believe she'd ignore the rest of her family and friends meanwhile, and that everyone else would likewise be talking about him all the time. Especially when last season already showed that Fuu had moved on from her grief, and had a much more natural balance between characters. So, all in all this was still a nice continuation of a great SloL anime, but it quite wasn't up there with the first season+OVA. |
Tamayura: Sotsugyō Shashin (movie series) | Good | Hmm, did they tweak the character designs? Not sure it's an improvement :/ Looks like each movie is divided into two ~ep.-length parts. And of course every character appears at least once, showing off their respective traits and tics. Overall it's not a bad addition to the series, and the end is fitting, even if it did get a bit soppy now and then. This series evolved a lot from how it started. Pretty good, but I kinda liked how it was in the OVA and first season too. |
TANK S.W.A.T. 01 (OAV) | Good | Another story about Leona Ozaki, this time as a tank squad leader. The 3D in this anime looks pretty amateurish in 2012, but it doesn't really harm the story. It's nice to see the Puma twins again, and in non-criminal roles too. |
Tansuwarashi (movie) | Good | Oh, this one's cute too. |
Tantei Kageki Milky Holmes TD (TV) | Weak | Somehow, Milky are back to being de-powered, the police is just Kokoro and Totsugawa, Feathers is still there but side-lined, Arsene made only a token appearance, and we get a completely new character who is suddenly the center of attention. Also, lots of borderline ecchi boob gags. I hope this first ep. wasn't indicative of the rest of this season, but I doubt it. Three eps. in it's still just a lot of nonsense which happens to have characters who look and sound like MH. They act even more like caricatures than in S1/2 though. Each ep. is just a nonsensical part of the collect all the mcguffins plot. Ep.11 is the finale (and not realy exciting either), then ep.12 is some let's remind everyone that this is a MH anime nonsense. Yah, this wasn't really a good season. The art/animation is okay, but the story just isn't. |
Tantei Opera Milky Holmes (TV) | Decent | It's totally random and wacky, but kinda fun too. It doesn't take itself seriously at all. The ending is a reset one though, which is more meh. Rewatched this before continuing with the other seasons. Is this more fanservicey than I remember? Now that I've watched more of those ultra-short gag anime, the jokes here aren't as funny. It's kinda disappointing that this anime starts with superpowers, only to remove them immediately, and then not returning them until the end (with another removal again at the very end). It feels a little deceptive to promise cool battles, then only deliver silliness. Well, at least I now know what to expect. I bet other seasons end with resets too. |
Tantei Opera Milky Holmes Alternative ONE -Kobayashi Opera to 5-mai no Kaiga- (special) | Good | Now this is more like what Milky Holmes should be. Magical girl detectives solving mystery crimes using their superpowers. |
Tantei Opera Milky Holmes Alternative TWO -Kobayashi Opera to Kokū no Ōgarasu- (special) | Good | Direct continuation of Alternative One. This is what Milky Holmes should be like ^_^ |
Tantei Opera Milky Holmes Dai-Ni-Maku (TV) | Weak | More of the same, except this time they don't even get to start powerful. The first ep. is full of "*wink* Remember the first season?" references which are just tiresome. I hope it'll get better soon or I might not last to the end of the movie. It didn't really get better. The ending is another reset, except this time the big battle covered eps.10&11 (against a nonsense villain btw), and the last ep. was spent working up to the sudden reset. What passes for characterization is merely repeating the same silly quirks over and over, and we already got tired of those in S1. So bleh. I think S3 at least has some different characters? Oh wait, first there's the two alternatives. Well, those are at least just two eps. |
Tantei Opera Milky Holmes Summer Special | So-so | One ep. of inconsequential silliness. Mori Arty is teased again at the end, so I guess she'll show up in S2? |
Tantei Opera Milky Holmes: Fun Fun Party Night - Ken to Janet no Okurimono (special) | So-so | And finally we have a single-ep. silly Xmas OVA. Nothing too interesting, but since it's only a single ep. it's not as bad for it to not have a decent plot. |
Tatakae! Space Attendant Aoi (movie) | Good | Anime Tamago 2019 Hmm, the world's pretty, the animation also quite good, the characters.. likeable, but they don't get much depth. The story is as expected for just 24min. not very deep. This anime is mostly pretty good though. |
Teekyū (TV) | Decent | Discussed here. Looks like silly short fun. Oh, it's one of those anime that you need to press the pause button every 0.1s. I suppose each ep. being only 2min. long is a good thing then.. :o Well, at 2min. (- OP) it goes by pretty rapidly. As expected, not everything is funny, but now and then it works sort of. I think I'll watch some more. |
Teekyū (TV 2) | Decent | This anime is just so random. And finished. Now I'm confused about the OVAs. The first one seems to reference some events I haven't seen :? |
Teekyū (TV 3) | Decent | The randomness continues. Some of it is funny, most of it only so-so. |
Teekyū (TV 4) | Decent | Meh. Commie's usual anglicization again. Maybe I should've gone with HorribleSubs, despite their lack of styling. Maybe the jokes are wearing thin? I feel like this season was less funny on average than earlier ones. |
Teekyū (TV 5) | Decent | This season was okay. |
Teekyū (TV 6) | Decent | Oh, it looks like a reference to Usakame? I'll watch that first then. .. And we're back. Near the end of this season there's hardly anything tennis club related left. Except for one ep. Guess they realized it themselves. |
Teekyū (TV 7) | Decent | I feel like this anime is getting more and more random as it goes on. More extreme reactions too. Can't say it was that much better at the beginning, but it's wearing a bit thin. |
Teekyū (TV 8) | Decent | And it's finished subbing. Oh, Tomarin and Udonko are in the OPs now. Guess we'll see more of them this season. Well, slightly more, but not a lot. Otherwise the same random silliness as always. |
(The) Telepathy Girl Ran (TV) | Good | The introductory arc (first 3 eps.) is rather packed with background info, but it looks like things will slow down a little now. Well, after that it was just a long string of episodic or 2-episodic stories, usually of a detective sort. Only the last one was three eps. long, and that one was kinda weird. Overall, a nice light-hearted anime, even though the dialogue felt a little wooden at times. |
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (TV) | Good | I've seen this mentioned a few times as a good isekai anime, but I guess because of the male MC didn't look into it much. I was reminded of it by a BanDori collab. Seems the male MC listing isn't completely accurate, it's more like enby MC. If it stops making the lewd-male jokes it could be quite decent. The animation quality is really good at least, as to be expected of an anime that gets 24 eps. for S1 right away. The MC is OP, but that much is standard for this sort of story. It feels less earned here though than So I'm A Spider's Kumoko, who had to work her way up from nothing. It feels like there's less conflict overall too. Hmm, at the end some bits were added that felt like more of a setup for a sequel than part of the story. Overall it was decent though. Maybe it would've been good to change the pronouns for Rimuru to they/them instead of he/him. The OVA was, well, the first half was as to be expected of an OVA these days, i.e. mostly fanservice. The second half was a nice sidestory though, hooked into that same sequel hook. |
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (OAV) | Decent | See comment for S1. |
