Gkids: Ghibli Fests to Earn US$1 Million by Year's End
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
GKIDS founder Eric Beckham stated in a Saturday article in the entertainment trade magazine Variety that the ongoing Ghibli film retrospectives are "on track to gross $1 million by year-end."
The series of 13 films including Only Yesterday, My Neighbor Totoro and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, opened at the New York Film Festival last September and was more recently hosted at the Portland Art Museum's Northwest Film Center in Oregon in May. Beckham stated that the film program was booked "solid" into 2013 as well.
The film distributor made an appearance at France's Annecy festival last weekend where anime films such as Asura, Makoto Shinkai's Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below, and Katsuhiro Ōtomo's "Hi-no-youjin" screened.
While there, the company picked up the rights to Goro Miyazaki's From Up On Poppy Hill feature film.
With its current success, the company plans to release 8-10 animated films a year with varying levels of distribution.
