The Japanese publisher Kadokawa Shoten ran an advertisement in Thursday's edition of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun paper to say that The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya light novel has sold over one million copies. According to Kadokawa, Nagaru Tanigawa's first Haruhi Suzumiya novel is the first light novel to reach this milestone. The advertisement does not specify if the number is for Japan only or worldwide.
The advertisement also notes that the overall Haruhi Suzumiya light novel series is read in 15 countries. The advertisement adds that the latest novel, Suzumiya Haruhi no Kyōgaku (The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya), has a print run of over 1.1 million volumes. However, since the novel was split across two 300-page volumes, there were actually 513,000 sets of the complete Suzumiya Haruhi no Kyōgaku novel.
The Little, Brown Books for Young Readers imprint is publishing the fifth light novel, The Rampage of Haruhi Suzumiya, in North America this month.
According to the Mainichi Shimbun paper's Mantan Web site, over 16.5 million copies of the Haruhi Suzumiya books — including light novels and manga — have been published in 15 countries, including 8 million in Japan.
