Japan's Weekly Playboy Mag Gets Manga Mag Spinoff
posted on by Egan Loo
Not-So-Daily Link of the Day: Shueisha's Weekly Playboy magazine for men is spawning a spinoff manga magazine called Man's Playboy on Thursday. The original Weekly Playboy magazine (which shares the trademark of Hugh Hefner's American Playboy magazine but publishes its own content) has been serializing manga for decades. Some of those serialized manga are Yudetamago's Kinnikuman Nisei (Ultimate Muscle: The Kinnikuman Legacy), Kia Asamiya's Kanojo no Carrera (My Favorite Carrera), and Hiroshi Motomiya's Ore no Sora.
The new Man's Playboy magazine derives its name from the man character in "manga." It will feature 22 one-shot manga stories, including spinoffs of the titles in the main Weekly Playboy magazine. Photo idol Miu Nakamura (Tales of Agriculture's Yogurti) is also making her debut as a manga creator with the four-panel comic called Miu-man "Kusa"ttemo Nakamura-ke!! Among the contributors are Asamiya (Silent Möbius, Steam Detectives), Maco-Ching Ishihara (The Three Young-Men in Midnight), and Aki Katsu (Manga Sutra/Futari Ecchi, Psychic Academy).
Besides manga, the magazine has photo spreads of Nakamura, cover girl Kii Kitano (Pocket Monster Diamond & Pearl: Chōkoku no Jikū e's Sheena), and Wakana Matsumoto. A feature article offers an insider's look into manga artist Kazuo Umezu's (in)famous candy-cane-striped "Makoto-chan House."
