Ashita no Joe Artist Chiba to Create Tomogaki Manga

90-page manga to be released in two parts in Kodansha's Young Magazine

This year's 48th issue of Kodansha's Young Magazine has announced on Monday that Tetsuya Chiba, the acclaimed artist of the Ashita no Joe boxing manga, will create a 90-page manga called Tomogaki. The new manga will mark the 50th anniversary of Chiba's major professional debut and the 40 anniversary of Ashita no Joe's manga launch. It will be split into two parts in Young Magazine.

Ashita no Joe (1968-1973) was a pioneering work in the field of sports manga, and it presaged the future success of other works such as Hajime no Ippo. While the original Ashita no Joe manga has not been released in North America, Tai Seng released the first anime film adaptation under the name Champion Joe. The newly formed distributor AnimeWho shipped the Joe vs. Joe video series. Last March, Chiba and Hajime no Ippo creator George Morikawa commemorated the 50th anniversary of Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine by drawing a poster of their manga's title characters shaking hands. Chiba drew his first new manga in four and a half years in May with the Akai Mushi one-shot manga in Shogakukan's Big Comic magazine.
