Speed Racer To Close NYC's Tribeca Film Fest
posted on by Mikhail Koulikov
Speed Racer, the Wachowski Brothers' live-action take on the classic 1960s car-racing anime, has been selected as the closing film of this year's Tribeca Film Festival. The festival, which was founded by legendary director Robert De Niro, will utilize various locations throughout New York City from April 23 to May 3.
The film is also being promoted by an innovative contest, which will incorporate Speed Racer images into commercials shown on MTV, VH-1, TV Land and Comedy Central. The spots, set to run from April 10 to April 18, will direct viewers to RaceForSpeedRacer.com, where they will need to provide a mobile phone number. On April 18, all those who enter will receive a text message with a Speed Racer trivia question and given two minutes to submit an answer. Ten winners will be drawn from all those who answer correctly within the time limit, and flown to Los Angeles for the film's April 26 world premiere.
At the premiere, the ten will also race remote-controlled cars based on those from the movie. MTV, VH1, and Spike TV will cover the race, and the grand prize will be an actual custom-built car inspired by Speed Racer's Mach 5 and valued at US$100,000.
Speed Racer will open in theaters nationwide on Friday, May 9.
