Merchandise Related Licensing Affected
According to the Nikkei Marketing Journal, Sony's animation company Aniplex will start handling their anime licensing business themselves.
The article only refers to merchandise licensing, there is no mention of foreign rights licensing.
Up until now, management of Aniplex licensing was handled by Sony Creative Products Inc. Aniplex's in house licensing department will be set up in April. Often their was a two to three month delay betweent the premiere of a TV series and the availability of merchandise at the retail level. By this time many series were already in their second half, resulting in a loss when compared to potential earnings had the merchandise been released sooner.
In order to improve returns, merchandising negotiations will take place prior to broadcast, and investments in merchandise will be accelerated. The first project to be handled by the new unit will be a new program set to air this summer.
