Theatrical re-release this spring, DVD in 4th quarter, Dolby Digital, new dub
This article on Yahoo News answers a few of the questions people have been asking about the DVD release of Akira.
According to the article Pioneer has contracted Intl. Video Conversions to restore and upgrade the film at a cost of aproximately US$1 million. The restoration will include "a high-definition mastering and a remixing of the audio components to create a soundtrack in Dolby Digital AC3 Surround Sound". Also being produced is a brand new dub from a fresh translation of the Japanese script.
According to Yahoo, the film is being prepared for a spring 2001 theatrical release while DVD and VHS releases are planned for fourth quarter 2001 (October - December).
No word on whether the Dolby Digital remix will be done for the Japanese audio as well, or if it is only being done for the English audio.
