Anime singer and voice actress Minori Chihara (Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Minami-ke) and singer Aira Yūki (The Book of Bantorra, IDOLM@STER: XENOGLOSSIA, sola) are joining the lineup of people who will sing the classic opening theme song for the television broadcast of the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 anime series/film project. The lineup already includes Hironobu Kageyama (Dragon Ball Z, Saint Seiya), his JAM Project group (Cardfight!! Vanguard, Bakuman.), Shōko Nakagawa ("Shokotan," Beelzebub, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood), Isao Sasaki (Galaxy Express 999, original Space Battleship Yamato), Ichirō Mizuki (Mazinger Z, Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Kamen Rider), and Mitsuko Horie (Dr. Slump, Doraemon, Jewelpet, Kamen Rider Stronger).
A total of 31 people will unite to form the "Project Yamato 2199" group to sing the theme song. The official website for the series will be announcing more names in the lineup every day until the television version premieres in Japan on April 7.
A portion of the proceeds from the sales of the new opening theme version's CD will be donated to the areas affected by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
Chihara also voices Miezela Celestella in the film and television series and Yuki previously sang the series' first ending theme, "Hoshi ga Towa o Terashite iru."
The fifth installment in the film series, which is composed of episodes 15-18, will premiere in 12 theaters in Japan on April 13, and then will ship on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on May 28.
